That's because myself and Worsy have taken over and feel north Shropshire is the only answer as it was the one we came up with. smile

I listened...I'm (we're) moving to Thirsk very shortly. I've stopped telling people how nice N. Yorks is - don't want them all invading. smile

What do people think of the area around Lincoln?

I am looking to downsize to a detached 3 bed property with a good size garage.

10 years ago I'd have agreed, but the popularity of York with exiles from the SE has pushed prices up excessively, the popularity of York as a Geordie stag and hen destination has diminshed the appeal of the city centre on a weekend and the council have done their best to bring traffic to a standstill.

There are far, far nicer places in N Yorks to live than York.

To those here looking to retire to the middle of nowhere with acres of space....do you have small social lives, or are you bored with friends?
Okay, provocatively worded, but the question is valid: if we upped sticks and moved 100 miles away, both our social lives would be massively halted. Even throughout pandemic times, I’ve made a point of taking cycle exercise past mates houses so we have a conversation on their doorstep: kept me sane!

I get that zoom has proven many to be able to work from anywhere with half-decent broadband....but zoom is an utterly rubbish replacement for a few pals in a pub. Side conversations are impossible, and if one person has a loud laugh, it dominates, instead of being background atmosphere.

Just curious. Maybe I’ll feel different in 5 or 10 years and want to get away from it all....
My mrs is, for reasons that I must admit I don't fully comprehend, determined that we'll move out of London when I retire.

My stipulation is that we'll have to go somewhere with plenty of life & plenty to do on foot.

I'd hate to be isolated somewhere which involves driving somewhere continuously.

The absolute minimum for me would be a market town with a decent choice of pubs within walking distance plus a decent restaurant or two.

Anything smaller and I'd be crawling the walls.

Wanted me to buy quad bikes, huge mowers tractors - was all ok. But then wanted to retain title to the solar panels and the income they generated, then compromised to he'd sell them to me for an extra £18k, but then wanted a £10k option to buy fee, non refunable. At that point we withdrew on advice of solicitor.
Curious - as someone who fell out on a sale over some hyper over-valued Ikea furniture! Were these PV panels on the domestic roof and sub 4Kw or a more commercial affair? Mine were £12k new 10 years ago - half that now - so looks somewhat toppy!

But no barn/shed. I need something circa 2000 sq/ft give or take a bit.

Problem now, is any barn that size can now be converted to a house under Q class. And so is valued as such

Too much @625k?
Yes, too much. Budget 500-550K. Which WAS enough 12 months ago.

That ones on an A road. Not going to work. Cant do major road noise.

Yeah, i know, im being fussy!

Happy with a project. Even quite a major one. Must have a shed/barn though.

And where's the ambulance coming from when you have your heart attack?

About five years ago, I fked up big time and wrote off my car against the front of a milk tanker in Knightsmill in Cornwall, right on the A39, and not exactly the middle of nowhere.

The ambulance came from Plymouth and took an hour.......................

To add to that, we then had a puncture and had to wait for another one to arrive. Time from accident to arriving in hospital was three hours and, no, it was too dark and wooded for the air ambulance - we did ask.

I know it's not the sort of thing most people, me included, don't plan for but getting older focuses the mind a bit more on the what ifs..
You cant let "what ifs" rule your life..

On the basis of the above, do you now not drive in rural cornwall. Or rural anywhere for that matter?

I think that the point I was trying to make was that in some places, you're on your own a lot more when things don't go to plan. It could have been the locals who came out to see if we were OK who needed the ambulance, not us.

Now, we live in the middle of York so I don't ever need to drive again if I don't want to. I do want to and I will for as long as I can but if I can't, it's not the end of the world.

Going to see my mate who lives in the middle of nowhere, down a mile long cart track off a tiny side road off a B road going nowhere may, sadly, become a thing of the past at some point.

And a Dog chew by the looks of it....

York is just like any other medium sized City, it has good and bad places. Personally I wouldn't want to live too close, may be five miles out would be fine. The north ring road is a right pain, as is the A64 east of the City. Plus of course the likelihood of flooding. We have dismissed a number of possible houses for that reason. It must be a nightmare for those that own properties in flood areas, they will really struggle to sell.

Harsh!!!

I dont dither enough for that. Though arguably dithered to much as pricers have run away in the last year. The simple fact is insufficent budget and not enough life left to overcome that and keep pace with rising prices. Or Wales, Or west coast of scotland.

We are about 15 miles south. Moved here because of wife's family but it's turned out ok.

Lincoln is a nice city with good shops, nightlife, cafes, places of interest, restaurants and culture.

As has been mentioned before the Wolds are lovely with rolling hills. Where I am is a bit flat but good for cycling smile

How close do you want to be and what kind of budget?

All these people on here that have moved, how many wre moving to an area they had no connection too?
Not yet at retirement age yet, but moved when we had kids 26 years ago to be closer to.my wife's family.
Wife has made some good friends locally, but her Dad died of heart failure in October and it looks like her mum is now in palliative care because her heart is fked. I suspect she has no more than a few weeks left.

Wife's brother lives near us. Hes been an arse for years.
Wife's sister lives closer but expects alot from us and gives little back...only if it suits her agenda.
So, I'm waiting until our kids 27 and 24 start their own families and I'm going to be suggesting we move closer.
She died on Wednesday.
sorry to hear that chap frown

We live in North East Hampshire at the moment but are putting our feelers out for a house to retire to in the Corbridge area of Northumberland. My wife comes from there but moved south when very young. Any views ?
