Expensive cities are expensive. I get that. What I don't understand is that we are a small island where none of us are very far apart. To have such a large disparity between a London suburb and some places within a slightly longer commute to the city. Take a zone 2> "London" (and I use the term loosely by what some describe as London) which is still some 40 min tube to central town. Still many multiples of a non-London property that is only 50/55 mins on a train. And as for the "having everything on the doorstep", its either the same 40 mins into central town, an alarmingly expensive taxi, or its a small centre of your own sub-district of London - all of which seem pretty much on a par with the convenience (or lack of) that you would have in the provincial commuting towns.
Don't get me wrong, I love city living. However, the suburbs of London are not that to me. They are a very overpriced way to live the part of city living that seems neither rural pleasantness nor city living where a 5 minute walk and you're in the heart of the action. £1.3m for a 3 bed semi in Acton?? I'll pass thanks.

I appreciate that particular house is - I was speaking more generally about the more distant borough disparity -v- outside of the M25. The sliding scale doesn't seem to be as linear as I would expect. I am sure the same applies to many top cities mind.Bluedot said:

Ignoring the price, look at the daylighting. Windows on one side only, and a lightwell to "compensate" on the other. Coupled with the "hard surfaces everywhere" aesthetic, it - on every floor other than the top - feels like some dystopian prison. It's the kind of place that, coupled with the mortgage statement, would drive one to suicide...

At half the price I'd still be flabbergasted, but at £1.25m I'm genuinely blown away by the madness of it.

Overpriced, I think - but near a nice commuter(ish) line into London, will probably benefit from HS2. With a bit of nice interior design, this place would be pretty much my perfect home. Large enough to knock about in, not too large to become a millstone round the neck. Obviously needs some sort of garaging for toys, but apart from that, I like it.

I don't think it had the same decor but I recall Tonker commenting on the convoluted way you had to literally go outside of the house to get to certain rooms. For instance imagine you are a guest in one of the bedrooms and fancy a swim? look at the route you need to trace.

My house, will be a fully refurbished, 6 bed, 4 bath semi-detached with just under 3000 square feet when done. It is in London (admittedly Zone 3). It will, completed, cost less than this one, uncompleted.
Mind you - location, location, location etc.

The downside being, due to the type of house it would inevitably be in a crappy area, as around 70% of Derby is 'new build' stuff from the 80's onwards.

I recall that comment too, and also seem to remember that the vendor is big into towbars. For caravans.
