Hello,
First post in homes/gardens and need a little help please.
We have just moved home and I am having palpitations at the size of the lawn :-)
A friend has this layed up and is for sale, I took a quick look last night and it looks reasonable. I thought I could id it when I got home but after an hour on google I had no luck.
I am sure I read 'made in usa' somewhere on it but the name sticker is ripped, the is a number 8/30 and its yellow :-)
Would anyone have any idea what it is and its value, been told it runs but can be tough to get into gear. Thanks in advance, Steve

Usual convention indicates it's an 8hp 30" cut so 8/30. Probably a Briggs and Stratton engine. All these smaller mowers are very similar, it'll be belt driven ( both the wheels and the cutting deck ). Parts can be quite pricey ( esp belts ). So unless he's talking about basically giving it to you and you have the time for a project I'd be inclined just to get one off Ebay that's in better condition for £500-600 quid. Just bought one of these and really impressed with the quality. Good engine too.

Our most interesting, and favourite mower is actually engine-less'ish:
Cuts a two acre field (pasture grass) in 7 mins.
2 acres is 4046 square meters. If that mower is 2 meters wide (looks like 3 x 2 foot sections) you would need to mow at an average 35km/hr assuming zero overlap, this also doesn't account for turning on the ends. Cuts a two acre field (pasture grass) in 7 mins.
Our combine is 7.5 meters wide and it won't cover 2 acres in 7 minutes.

Well, I can't compete with pretty much anything in this thread, but...
Our back garden is tiny. When we moved in it was a sthole, so with the approval of the landlady we ripped pretty much everything up
and sowed a nice lawn for my daughter to play on (pretty much the only plan we had)
I got donated my mums old Flymo Compact 330, and even with a new blade it's st. Big, bulky, blows grass everywhere etc. So I found this little baby on a facebook selling page for £10
Stripped it fully down, cleaned everything, re-greased everything and had it running better. Used it last season, but the blunt blades were an issue, as it tore the grass more than cut.
So yesterday I found a new old stock bottom blade, as the current one has been attacked by a bench grinder in the past and is properly uneven, and bought one of these
which took the blades from this
to this
Works much better now. Will re-sharpen it with the new bottom blade to true everything up, and maybe later in the eyar backlap it with grinding paste to refine the edge. For the size of our garden, it's alot less bovver than a hover! Cuts very long grass too, there's a bit of land around a tree out the front that the council dont cut, and no one else does either, so I tidied it up yesterday to try ou the sharpened blades and it's perfectly good enough.
I'd love a garden big enough to justify a ride-on, but that won't happen soon, so I'll stay happy with my stty old qualcast!

About five years ago I started employing a gardener to mow the lawns.
So my mower was parked up in a damp shed and forgotten about.
I dragged it out a couple of days ago, fully intending to be taking it to the tip.
Out of curiosity, I whipped out the plug, pulled it over and was surprised to see a big fat spark.
So I poured a bit of fresh petrol into it, took the air cleaner off and gave it squirt of Bradex.
It started on the second pull of the cord.
It's only an old Mountfield with a little Honda CGV motor, but I was amazed that it fired up and ran perfectly after five years of standing utterly neglected.
I was so impressed that I treated it to a squirt of WD40 and promoted it from the shed to the garage.
No pics, I'm afraid.
