I've a morbid fascination with southern plantations. So sinister, yet so... nice. The willows (or are they oaks?) are just the icing on the cake. Here's another one I've been eyeing up for ages: http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/6466-Plantersvil...

they are hauntingly beautiful places. The willows are all very "12 years a slave". Can almost imagine the nooses swinging from them... i just made myself sad with that thought, sorry!

I was gonna say it seemed overpriced until I saw it had 1000 acres. But even then, is that a lot? Plenty of space down there.

Having done a complete 180 we have decided to step away from a contempory build on my Surrey plot and are currently trying to commission this guy to design our house. As he has never designed in the UK before it might not happen but we are hoping. We are looking to build a smaller version of about 5000 - 6000 sq feet version on the house with the Porsche spider out front.

I have always loved the New England look

Best wishes for your new build. I do not know the exact site but a modern home always nicely fit with a classic Stuttgart, imho cool

Any reason you'd not commission a local architect to do something similar? It's not a particularly unique style is it?

Genuine question, not trying to be critical.

Now that would be a nice project to watch should you fancy sharing some pics when it's underway.

You'd be much better off choosing a good local architect who knows the area has good contacts at the local council and has a good idea of design. Any good architect will listen to the brief from the client and be able to design a house to the style that you want that also has a good chance of getting planning permission.

I've seen too many houses built by distant architects and they never fit in with the surroundings as well as they should.

I wouldn't recommend employing an architect who will be remote from the build ever, you need them to be visiting the site during construction, particularly in the later stages and to meet with you and discuss the inevitable variations.

I've been a QS with a specialism in bespoke houses for quite a few years, projects from £1.5 to £60 million. Worked with many good architects in that time, one or two who are outstanding at what they do. Any of those guys could work with you and design the property you want.

If you are interested, send me an email & I'll pass on their details.

ETA: They are mostly London based, small specialist practices but Surrey would be within their remit.

Don't worry about it mate. The reason I have been talking to this guy, and this may sound corny, is that I want a house that feels like it has been picked up from Cape Cod and dumped onto a plot in Surrey. So far I have not been able to find someone who appears to get all the details, especially the interiors right here in the UK. If anyone could recommend someone then that would be great
