The conclusion from this thread is that I need to move up north and I can get a 7 bedroom house with 40 acres of land for what I'm looking to pay even quite a way away from London for a decent 5 bedroom house.

4500sq ft in one of the best residential areas iof Sheffield, for under £1m... needs a fair bit of decor, but it's a lot of house for the money. And it's got a ballroom...

I'm dont know its recent history and I only became aware of it while day dreaming. Not a pretty house, but a fair size, reasonable location (but not too far away from both Doncaster and Worksop..). The kitchen seems to be perhaps of this century but not sure on anything else. I do like some of the furniture and artwork, presumably they're not included - perhaps just dressing?
Seldom see such a contrast between interior and exterior.

Savills has, by what must surely be a glitch in it's marketing database, sent me a glossy magazine called "Country Property Portfolio, Inspiring Properties Across the Country"

Many of the properties in it have featured here already, but here are a couple that caught my eye that I don't recall seeing before

Quite amazing, almost as if they've got the interior photos' mixed up with the wrong house. Wonder how much better the exterior would look with a jet wash and some weed killer.

Apropos of the North Aston property, haven't drones revolutionised how properties are presented.

Isn't it mad, you would have thought they would splash out on a few hundred quid on a couple of gardeners for a couple of days to tidy up a bit before marketing a @1.75m house. Even if they'd just raked the gravel and run a mower over the long grass and weeds.

It's been a while since somewhere I've worked at has come up on here. I was there last year, lovely surroundings; within easy walking distance of Hathersage. Like most properties of any decent age, it needed work and I'd imagine it would be an ongoing concern.

Here's one near me.

I remember looking at a listing for that a couple of years ago. I think it will make a very pretty house - the aspect to the formal garden is just lovely, but it does need some care!

It won't be as dilapidated as it might have been as it needed rebuilding fairly recently after a fire in 1984 and the interiors will not all be original. Although some of the contents might be part of the 1983 auction if they are specific ti the house and survived the fire and could form part of the deal.

"In the early nineteenth century it was bought by the Newcastle Estate, and served as the home of the Dowager Duchess of Newcastle. It was sold by the estate about 1912. In 1932, it was owned by Charles Francis Darley of the brewing family. It was sold by his descendants by auction on 21 Oct.1983. The house and grounds (8.57 ac.)sold for £110000, the contents for £118000. The purchaser, a local businessman,
planned to turn it into a country restaurant, but on the evening of Sunday 16th September 1984 it was extensively damaged by fire. The fire,
caused by two Calor gas heaters, was fought by 40 firemen but three quarters of the building was gutted. "

I'm not sure who it is that's selling this one, I just spent a few minutes doing a bit of research and 2 chaps bought it at auction in the mid 90s for just over £200k (split roughly 50/50 for the house and its contents) and seem to have set up a equine rescue and stud farm there, as well as renting the rooms on an informal HMO basis, leaving all the "stately home" furniture in situ.

The stud farm closed a few years ago due to ill health, reading between the lines there's not a lot in the pot to cover the cost of jetwashing etc but the basic fabric of the building actually appears OK.

It's in the wrong part of the country for me but I could do soooo much with that!

That is very nice indeed. Seems reasonably-priced too.

I don't know if Neville Thomas QC and his wife sold that house and this is the buyers selling on, but this article about it dates from 2012: http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/glans...

I believe it's a lot to do with being a long way from anywhere.

Also, there are issues with the local railway station, which doesn't seem to have service on a Wednesday...
