Had the autumn/winter feed on the front lawns last week. It's improving but still a few weeds in places. Major work on the back lawns in a week or two - need to order about two tonnes of soil, lot of work.

Have changed mowers - from a Hayter 56 Pro, to a 48 Pro. Much easier to move around now (and align the stripes!), but the stripes aren't as pronounced for obvious reasons. Oh and ignore the wonky well cover, being dealt with soon wink

So with colder weather coming in whats the Winter prep? i.e. what are the final steps to take before I move into the 'I can't be bothered as its too cold' stage.

Should I cut it a few times to get it very short, or leave it? Rake it? (no scarifier).

I have some lawn feed, should I keep chucking it over during winter, or not.

I've cut mine, but not too short - otherwise I think that encourages moss. I'm sure someone more qualified than me will be along with a more comprehensive answer!

The seasons seem a bit topsy turvy at the moment anyway!!

I scarified and reseeded a month ago. It's mostly looking good, there are a few small patches where the seed hasn't taken due to not scarifying hard enough, but I'd run out of room in the compost bins for any more.

I've also decided that I should upgrade my ancient flymo to a cylinder mower. The garden is small enough that electric is preferable, any recommendations for a 15" to 18" cylinder mower?

I have bought a couple of old Ransomes push mowers, neither of which were complete, that I'll convert into one good one but it will be far to much effort to use all the time. I'll enjoy the restoration.

Definitely don't cut it short, as said that will encourage moss.

Pretty much everything you need to know about winterizing your lawn here https://www.lawnsmith.co.uk/lawn-diary/october-law...

Currently levelling off my lawn due to large summer house being built , and I need some advice regarding top soil etc.

As per pic below, the bit in red is very high and is being dig out to just below level with the concrete pad and a small r raining wall built ,we intend to throw whatever is removed into roughly the blue area to level that low bit off.

I have already removed the turf from the red section and it is nothing but solid clay underneath. Once the soil has been moved from the high spot to the low section, I estimate I will have around 30cm to build up in places with top soil . I have read about mixing sand with top soil somewhere on here, how much sand and what sand ? Is it plain Jane builders sand ? Also do I HAVE to remove the turf from the area I will be covering ? There are no weeds at all, only patchy grass which will either die off or grow through, neither of which I see as a problem ?

Any tips or advice much appreciated, this is all new ground for me (pardon the pun!)

Too late to do something about weeds and moss now we're into October?

I've got 500m2 of mostly Dandelions and moss. I mowed at the weekend (nice and short, which will help the moss along nicely!).

Don't want to spend a huge amount of time or money. Have access to a Scarifier and spreader.

Put a round of Verdone/Weedol after mowing. Raise the mowing height next time and a bit more the next time. In 2-4 weeks put an application of iron sulphate on, probably do it again in Dec/Jan.

Evergreen autumn 'weed and feed' says apply between September and mid November. Never known whats different between the autumn version and the normal.

Get it one, fortnight later, rake it out with a electric rake scratchier jobby... ... will be too late to overseed I guess, felt optimistic when I did mine last week having started the process three weeks before now, but no harm in killing off the moss.

Depends where you are.....temperatures are pretty mild still, well in to the teens for the next couple of weeks around much of the country, so I'm hoping the seeding I did last weekend may catch hold!

Same. I'm on the Wirral, mainly teens as you say, 8deg overnight in a week or so, but hopefully a while to the first frost. Worse case I have wasted £10 worth of grass see a same again in compost to cover it. Would put some fleece on it but its at the back of the shed!

We’ve had ice on the cars a few mornings not sure about a ground frost just yet. Lows of 2c. Location; Peak District

Fair enough. Driving to S.Wales down the a-roads through the Brecons etc at about 11pm the car kept binging off that it was going below 3deg and then back up again, got down to 1.5 and up to about 8 but never below zero.

Its coming! Heatings certainly on, and in the new house, costing a forrrrrtune!

I’ve just applied some Weedol from concentrate (Verdone Extra) over my whole lawn. However a few watering cans in I realised that my watering can is not as large as I thought and I have therefore probably overdosed a bit, although probably no worse than 1.5x. Does anyone know the margin for error with this stuff? Should I go and get the sprinkler out for an hour right now?

Autumn fertiliser will have a lot less Nitrogen (to discourage too much lush leafy growth which would be vulnerable to the cold) and more Potassium to harden the grass ready for the winter.
