Central Heating - quote
Discussion
Just got a rather eye watering quote for installation of oil central heating in the house.
Storage heaters and a cold house means its a fresh install.
The quote roughly breaks down into;
11 radiators
Unvented hot water tank
Oil tank with a concrete base to be put in
Internal 21-26kw boiler
1300 l oil tank
Removal of storage heaters, with conversion of the old circuit to normal mains and replacement to plugs.
It excludes remedial works as we cant get under the ground floor so pipes to be run wherever we can.
I am trying to get plubmers to alternate quote without success, any views on what people would consider reasonable for that little lot?

Don’t know if this will help but my Son has just had:
Fresh install, oil based, no previous central heating, vented system.
Utility spec Worcester Bosch, extensive pipework runs required due to location.
Oil tank and base not required, approx 9 rads, new copper tank.
Separate upstairs/downstairs zones.
Solid floors downstairs, traditional upstairs, all wall chasing done by ourselves, everything else completed and supplied by the Plumber.
Came in at about £6800.
No gas near us unfortunately :-( Oil or Bio-Mass is where it's at, otherwise I would go gas in a heart beat!Fresh install, oil based, no previous central heating, vented system.

We are coming in around 11.5k including VAT !!
I suspect they are quoting high as they don't want the work or have enough they can put a high bid in and won't be bothered if it doesn't happen.
Not sure - he said he had a company he works with for that kind of thing.
Definitely going to ask though, he said boiler was more pricey. But I assume time we take out the oil tank and associated works it might not be much more.
Obviously I need to check out the funding etc

Thanks guys, just waiting for the plumber to call me to talk through options.
They have another company they bring in to quote for that side of things. I am hoping its fairly straightforward to amend the quote to include bio-mass.
I just need to read through the process and how you get onto the scheme etc.

Thanks FFG...lunchtime reading for me!
Just off the phone to a company fairly local to us (as local as the Highlands can get anyway).
He has given me the number of the green deal assessor and actually works with the plumber who quoted the oil system anyway.
Happy to come and see the house to give us some design ideas.
Next hurdle is convincing the wife its a good idea - get the assessment done etc.
Estimated £2k PA return based on current consumption, so ROI looks like 8 yrs (ish).

Right after various chats - plumber reckons I can roughly drop his quote by 4k if we take out the oil boiler and is happy to work with the company in question.
His first window is end Jan in line with the Bio Mass company - so no issues either way.
Bio Mass company have also confirmed I can site the boiler in the external garage, so I can minimise the disruption in the house which is good news too.
What I need now is the Green Energy Survey and to convince the wife, plus an estimate of the cost of the Bio Mass boiler to see if it stacks up.

Brilliant thanks!
Guy at work has just had one fitted by another local company. So giving them a call shortly see if they can come out and give me figures before we head off doing the assessment.
Someone was saying there might be a threat to the tariffs in the new year though so I may end up a little worse off.

It looks like domestic rates for new applicants are going down 10%, however you've enough time as you only need the boiler 'in'.....
Good news!Spoke to another company as someone from work just had them fit out their house with a wood pellet system, so real experience and recommended.
Company were excellent on the phone and sending someone round Friday to quote for both so I get a direct comparison.
Already highlighted some things to consider and said to wait getting an assessment as they can give ballpark figures before we spend money.
They can also fit us in earl next yr either way so no more storage heaters soon!
Other half is open to idea now, once I said it would be in our external garage so no fuss inside house.
So plumber came round Friday night - good guy and very sharp.
He pointed out my other quote included fitting an oil boiler inside the house, which in his view wasn't the way to go due to smell.
Fitting of the system into the garage presents him no problems and he wasn't phased at all with access to under the floors etc.
I am just waiting for the quote but he estimated 22k for a Windhager, 10/11 raditors, fitting etc
Due to phone tomorrow to get the EPC/Green assessment completed.
I am not sure whether I have cavity walls or whether they are insulated, so that might be something we need done as part of the process.
He is quoting for oil too - so the good news is either way we are happier with him as a company!

Righty...
Survey done and there are cavity walls :-(
However they may be too small to fill so I need a survey from an insulation company.
Bad news is that I cant get anyone out until the 15th or later, putting me badly behind for a post xmas install.
Not only that they can do the job until well into the new year.
Still waiting for the RHI calculation to come through as well.

Just got the report through last night, he wasn't that advanced!
RHI is less than I hoped for @ £2493 PA so a projected return of £15600 ish over 7 yrs.
The quote for the system is 23k, but includes about 1.5k for weather controls. Not convinced we need them TBH.
So if we assume £21.5 including VAT then its costing me £6k all in over the period of 7 yrs. That's a still a saving over the oil system, but I don't know enough about fuel consumption of pellet vs oil vs electric to know how much the savings will be in terms of energy bills yet.
If I add cavity wall costs on top of that and interest payments on top of the 10k interest free, it may become marginal.
Plumber however said he would tweak his boiler sizing and quote according to what came through, so it may come down a bit yet.

You should be looking to pay about £13-15k for the boiler install with controls, your house plumbing/radiators on top?
That's about right from the breakdown they gave me - a fair chunk of the £21.5 includes installation of radiators and pipework etc. Also includes a new water tank etc
Well what a faff.....
Assesment says cavity walls - local people come round and say nope not a chance. Timber framed gable and you cant cavity insulate a mixed construction due to the risks. They also do green deal assesments and the position of the house and construction meant it should never have been on the report.
Fine - get letter from them confirming, call plumber who says great but just check with OFGEM on the RHI.
Phone OFGEM and they say not a chance - you have to get a building surveyor out with a signed form..."sigh"...
Phone surveyor, he says assessor was wrong try him first, assessor says wont change report - and now not responding to me.
Surveyor out this morning and within 2 minutes said timber frame and happy to sign forms (£60 later).
So maybe I can actually get on with this now!!
Sell the house at this rate...

Sorry for not updating the thread for a bit - I got a bit bogged down with all the bits and pieces so went to ground a bit.
All the paperwork is ready to go, I also had a joiner round to price some of the changes we want to make to the house next yr.
At the moment its a toss up between selling and doing the work however, so we need to make our minds up a little.
Its bloody cold in the house at the moment - so this would make a massive difference, but the other work pushes the limits of what I want to spend and even then not sure will be 100% happy with the house.
So in summary ready to go with Bio Mass - not so ready in the sense need to make some financial decisions first.
