I'm in the final stage of planning my kitchen. I have one normal oven and I'm stuck between a second normal oven or a steam one.

So, has anyone got a steam oven and would you recommend?

Can only say that they use steam ovens on passenger aircraft, so if you want your dinner to taste like airline food then go ahead! wink

I would say that has nothing to do with the oven - if you know what I mean!

Combi ovens are superb, and you'll probably find that your normal oven will see little use if you have both.

Do they have a problem browning stuff? Or does it cycle between steam and dry heating?

We use ours a fair bit, great for cooking Veg & Fish. Its not that we use it instead of the main over, we use it instead of the hob.

How often do you roast or bake in more than one oven, or how often do you think you will?

The steam oven option is good because if you use it properly and it doesn't just become an expensive kitchen filler it really will give you lots of options. Not just for veg or potatoes but for meats too.

You're doing the right thing considering this properly Though as you'll be annoyed if you make the wrong choice.

Gas or induction Hobs, or one of each?

Exactly. I cook a lot so need to get this right. The fact that I'll also have one conventional oven has me leaning to the steam for versatility.

Going induction on the hob.

How much does the water chamber encroach on size? Can it roast conventionally or is it steam only?

Would a suitable water tray in a conventional oven set at 100c give the same results?

I don't know the answers btw

I had never seen these until this weekend whilst looking at kitchens, the one we saw the oven was tiny compared to a regular one due to the water bottle in the side and for some reason (probably balance) the same space was blanked off on the other side which knocked about 3-4" of the width of the oven.

Be interested to know if there are other brands out there that give the same oven space. Presumably you can use it as a conventional oven also.

my mum has a miele one which she likes to use it for her vegetables, its meant to be healthy, all I know is when you open the door and then shut it while in use it makes a loud fart noise hehe

They do hot air and steam cooking - combination ovens. Well the Neff ones I'm looking at do.

I seem to remember they were very pricey when we looked, is it still the case? The other thing that put me off was the running cost of a steam oven against steaming on the gas hob, it seemed more energy efficient to steam on the hob than heat up an oven.

Lot more expensive - £300-600 more depending on model - and was shocked at how small the capacity was as I had nor realised the size of the water reservoir.
