Wood is by far better to burn upon a pile of its own ashes, coal is opposite to that and you need to keep the grate clear of ash. Mixing the two has no advantages. If you burn smokeless coal sweep flue once yearly, wood twice a year. You might want to check your house insurance policy for further advise on flue sweeping.
We burn kiln dried logs and anthracite coal together. Much better than either on their own and kicks out a ton of heat.
Incidentally we've just had the sweep out for the first time in the 2 or 3 years since it went in, he said it was surprisingly clean given how often we use it (it usually gets a couple of tons of wood sent up it a year)

Snap, I use the exact same recipie in my open fire, and I certainly agree that the heat from the combination of fuels seems greater than otherwise. It's probably just illusory. For me the main thing is the wood gives a nice flame, but the coal kicks out the heat. Gassing Station | Homes, Gardens and DIY | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
