Afternoon

I have a 6m Long, 2.5m High, half brick (102mm) Thick wall which runs parallel (1 m offset) to the house (a sheltered location).

It has a flat roof and is used to house the old oil boiler and tank.

The problem is there appears to be next to no restraint, although there is:
• The roof framing to the top, but I’m not sure how well the roof structure is attached to the brickwork.
• 3 Piers
• A return at one end but its not bonded to the structure of the house.

As I want to have the tank / boiler removed I need to take out the return brickwork, to give the tank people access.

I obviously want to install suitable restraint to ensure the integrity of the wall. I was thinking of the following options:
1) Install timber ties between the wall and the house, at 1.8m (Just above head height). Something like 38mm x 69mm CLS on joist hangers at suitable centres. Maybe fitting a CLS ‘batten’ along the length of each wall to help spread the restraint.
2) Install steel ties between the wall and the house. Same principle but with 30mm x 5mm Steel Straps. Again with CLS ‘batten’ along the length of each wall to help spread the restraint.

Using either option I could also add some steel straps between the roof structure and the wall in question.

So any thoughts from those more experienced / qualified, would be most appreciated.

Especially regarding:
Pro’s con’s of timber vs. steel
Centres required
Timber Battens to spread restraint Horizontal or Vertical
Cheers Chaps

Hi
Do you need the wall there at all? I would look at taking the whole lot down if need be, it won't be too strong on its own, even with the roof holding it in place.

If I remove the whole structure, I’d have to replace it with a fence or something as it’s the boundary with next door. And if I get the tank and boiler out, it would make a good storage area.

The tanks guys use a nibbler / cutter thingie, so need better access that currently available.

Any other thoughts on restraint, gratefully received.
