I'm new with SP and we need to do some major re-wiring so needed an isolation switch on the fuse. Called SP, all fine, yes madam we do that, can book you in 3 weeks time. Great, confirmation letter arrived giving date and AM appointment. Electrician arrives ready to work as soon as the switch is on, SP don't.

2 hours on hold getting through to them, finally greeted by an obtuse customer services person who categorically stated they DON'T fit switches. She also told me the appointment was 'rejected' by area 19 installation team. However, they don't tell the customer this because there is no process for them to do so. I raise a complaint and share my irritation with them on their SM account after waiting in all day and paying my electrician for the day.

To be later told by the SM admin that they DEFINITELY DO fit isolation switches.

I think 'good-bye' is the only way forward for this one! Monumentally incompetent, i hate to think what they'd be like in a crisis!

i am still curious to know if anyone has had one fitted recently?

As an Electrician I just pull the main fuse. (My finger slipped and the seal fell out wink )

Yes we are technically not supposed to, but they turn a blind eye to it if it's done by a proper spark etc.

every spark I know do this, as getting isolator switches fitted by the DNO just doesn't happen, and how else are we supposed to do it?

Don't know f it's different in Scotland mind.

We had to get an isolator switch fitted as the installer of our electric car charging point (British Gas) said they weren't insured to pull the main fuse. A local sparky came out, looked puzzled at our explanation and muttered something rude about British Gas, pulled the fuse and fitted the switch with nae bother.

Yes my electrician has done the same today. We just can't afford to wait for this farce to be resolved with the state of some of our electrics being so dangerous.

What I find ludicrous is that SP can accept a request saying 'oh yes, that's fine, we do that', write a confirmation letter, then cancel the appointment (without telling me) and then say they don't do that kind of work when i call, only to be contradicted (openly) on Twitter.

The only way to describe your new supplier!

We moved from them when, after 12 months, they couldn't bill us using real reading but insisting on using estimated numbers - I think they have a random number generator as the bills would vary wildly. The matter is with the ombudsman now.

Also had many issues with Scottish Power, mostly billing in my case where they overcharged us by £800 - I dumped them a couple of years again for Ovo, who have so far been very good.

British gas fitted ours for just under £40. I nearly had a heart attack. I couldn't get a sparky to answer the phone for less than £40.. And they did it in a hurry as I needed it signing off
