I have a room, 2.6 meters wide.
At the end of the room i am thinking of having a 2.6m length of oak worktop to have as a desk. Not wanting to have feet to support the worktop i was thinking of batoning round the wall to take the weight of the worktop and 2 monitors.

Do you think a 27mm thick worktop will be sufficient?
I dont want it to sag over time.

Its going to be cut down to about 450mm wide

Thanks

I suspect you will get some sage over that distance without any support on the front edge.

You could use the offcut from the back to reinforce the front, assuming its not chamfered.

I agree, it will definitely sage over thyme... hehe

But seriously, I think you'll need some support, like some cantilever brackets every so often.

Sat across a corner (L shaped) it may stay up.

But you're probably going to need some bracing, as stated you could make some wedge supports out of offcuts, to still keep it floating.

The main thing is can the wall take the weight?

I did our 2.3m desk with laminate. Front edge is supported by some 50x50x5mm box section steel. It's has plates on the ends with the top are rear faces of the tube cut back to give access. The bar is set back from the front edge about 100mm I think, and wrapped with white vinyl to match the work surface. I calculated that 100kg will deflect it by ~F-all (<1mm). smile

I would guess that the worktop is not made out of 2.6m long pieces of wood. This general approach is correct though. I'd use a small steel beam for that span; set back slightly and in black it would not be seen.

Get the 40mm from worktops direct. It looks better and shouldn't sag.

You can buy some cheap ikea wood filing cabinets to use as stands if you're worried about the weight on the wall.

So i finished my worktop desk

Built on a 2x2" frame. The offcut from cutting the depth down was used to face the 2x2" wood at the front. Oiled it last night.

Very pleased so far. Glad i posted the original question because the 2x2 across the front will definitely help prevent the worktop from sagging

Thanks for the replies

Looks nice but a jointed piece of 2 timber won't be as strong as it looks. I'd put a 2" x 2" angle behind - it will strengthen it a lot and be completely hidden.

Perfect idea - then it will look good and be rock solid too.

Just found this and I am very interested in doing something similar. Do you have a pic of the frame underneath?
Thanks in advance
