I have fitted my last couple of bathrooms myself, and truely can't be bothered to do it again.

Nor can I be arsed to ring around a dozen local fitters to be told they are too busy, cant do it till December, can do it but I'll need to arrange a spark and a tiler too, or given "fk off" quotes it's too big/small/difficult/far-from-home/...

Sooo.. B&Q? Measure the room, choose fixtures/fitting/tiles/floor... over to you B&Q, and they do the lot.

Any of the other highstreet people any good/better/worth considering?

I just want easy... negotiate a deal, book a date, job jobbed.

I actually know three tradesmen who subby to b&q and they're all excellent at their job. Now that might mean my local b&q are lucky but I certainly know I would use these guys to do any work I personally needed.

I wouldn't like to guess on how much b&q charge mind.....

Friend is a b&q kitchen/bathroom designer. The stuff is perfectly good but the labour charges are horrific as you'll find out when you get a quote.

Thanks guys... I'll let you know when the numbers arrive!

Tradesmen are VERY expensive and VERY busy around here (west berks)... so should be interesting.

We have a B&Q kitchen and bathroom done at different times by different subbies. No issues and happy with the results but I did feel that the bathroom tiler, though competent, wasn't quite as good as the kitchen one - still nicely done though.
So in short it very much depends on who is allocated to do the job and what their strengths/weaknesses are.

After the installation disasters a few years back they really got to grips with the admin which was pretty efficient.

If you want a good no hassle job find a recommended specialist who does everything themselves.

B&Q charge huge amounts and add nothing but another later of "management" / complication into the mix.

Their online reviews are hardly glowing.

That's the trick isn't it? Finding a good person...

I had a guy who did a lid of repairs to the bathroom at my last place who was excellent but he charged an absolute bloody fortune, and over quotes by £2000 compared to the other plumber who did some repairs to my heating.

Everyone around here seems to be incredibly busy (6-9 month wait) or just not interested in anything that's not a massive job worth 10's of thousands.

I bet he's still cheaper than B&Q

I got a kitchen quote out of interest, the kitchen was a reasonable price, the fitting was ridiculous IIRC £7k I expect to fit it with my carpenter within 2 days.

You may find the bath to be a bit flexible especially if your standing in it for a shower. Easily rectified though. I have one in my rental it's like a B&q show house all perfectly decent.

Bathroom fitting is slowly becoming it's own trade away from plumbing. Plenty of firms offer an all in one services.

Do you have a City Plumbing Supplies local? Most have a bathroom showroom and a list of approved installers.

I ended up using B&Q for my bathroom for the exact reasons you give OP. It had a few minor issues due to the measurements they took being wrong but they sorted it all out. The entire thing was fairly painless and I just left them to it while I went to work.

I'm not overly chuffed with the quality of the units now it's been in a few years but since the guy that did the job was telling me he would have used the same units and saved me £1000's on the job I suspect it would make no difference.

Someone at work organised it themselves to save some money, they had no shower for about 3 weeks and had to go next door every morning, just as well they get on with the neighbour. It was exactly as expected with some person sick/stuck on another job/waiting for items to arrive/just not turning up etc etc.

Found myself in bath store today, had a chat around what we wanted and handed over measurements and he's going to put something together for us for next weekend!

Ballpark, looking like 3k for fixtures and fittings and tiles. 5k for install.

Is that a lot for the install? Complete turnkey with a 6 year warranty on the workmanship.

Followed up on a couple of the kitchen install bodges left by their monkeys; as with many things, don't be seduced or expect much comeback because they've got a "big name". To be fair they're probably no worse than average "bought unsighted", which is to say you could get a reasonable job or a carpy one, so if they're asking for big $ you can do better.

Better to buy "sighted", ie someone recommended whose work people vouch for, even if it means waiting a few months

Assuming it's a fairly regular size bathroom then I'd think 10 man days is more than reasonable - £200/day = £2k labour.

I had a whole wetroom install and floor to ceiling tiles for £2.8k VAT inc, that included them building the wetroom bit, tanking and most of the removal of old bathroom.

Bathroom is 2m by 1.6m, but it was central London and they did good work.

I supplied all materials bar the underfloor heating (part of the £2.8k quote).

I'd say that's a decent guess for an average bathroom install.

Would recommend sticking your requirements up on MyBuilder/MyHammer and waiting for the interested tradespeople to quote. Then it's as simple as just selecting one based on feedback/quote. As long as the requirements state they should be able to handle (or are qualified for) all required works, shouldn't be an issue.

Tell me about it!
Basically for extensions they are only looking at the big stuff ie over £150k as they are fully booked - or so a few have told me when I've tried to unbundle or look at stage extensions to fit around our needs.
