What would you guys think would be a reasonable amount to paint a window externally? The windows are quite large, on average approx 6' high by 3' wide and mostly sashes. About half are like the one below, the others just have a single piece of glass in each pane rather than 6 per pane as below. Does £120 including VAT sound about right?

Are they in good condition or are the windows badly flaking/rot and need a lot of prep?

Some are in decent condition with little flaking paint but others will need to be fully stripped - about half and half. There will not be any repairs needed for any of them though; a joiner who specialises in renovating sash windows is servicing and repairing them all. All the rotten/poorly repaired wood will be gone by the time the painting starts. The sashes with rotten wood do have to be repaired rather than replaced due to the listing but the repairs are being done properly.

What are you looking for? If a proper job with local primer on bare/repaired wood, then two coats of undercoat and a topcoat then £130 would be a fair price.

I thought it was a fair price to be honest, and the chap comes highly recommended by someone I trust, a friend in the trade. We do have a lot of these buggers, and I really do mean A LOT, so seeing the total price, Mrs QQ has ordered me to check that it's a sensible price. Having asked on PH, I can happily claim that I have checked it thoroughly hehe and just give the go ahead without getting more bloody quotes in wink

Just had this done. Paid £1100 all in for two guys working for five days. As you can see it was a lot of work, three full days stripping and repairs including cutting out cills and replacing them.

So I'd say your price seems reasonable.

Doesn't sound unreasonable. But there is a difference between a painter and a decorator. I'd ask what his proposed method is and the materials he's going to use.

Thank you smile The proposed method is "Burn off where necessary. Prepare and spot prime. Apply one Dulux weathershield

undercoat and one topcoat of Dulux weathershield gloss." Hopefully that should be ok. They will be painters rather than decorators and will only do striping and painting, no repairs.

Yes, does look very similar indeed. Stripping the narrow dividers will not be easy! There won't be any repairs or cutting out bad wood needed though as those are being done by a specialist joiner. The total cost isn't cheap but the sheer numbers have pushed it up to £6.4k.

Thank you very much all beer I knew PH was the right place to ask! smile

Tell me about it.

The three you see above were the last windows to get done. 26, 27 and 28!
