Making a table lamp

Turning a piece of wood into a nice stem for a table lamp, and thought I'd buy a lampholder to screw in the top. Except they all have the thread on the inside not the outside... seems they're all designed to fit onto threaded tube which I'd have to fit into the stem first. Is that right and if so where can I get the tube?

Or just get some hollow bar and put a bit of thread on each end.

Stick the lampholder onto a piece of dowel ,drill hole to let cable through ,drill hole in lamp stem wood ,stick dowel into hole . wink
