Quick joiner quote question
Discussion
Hello,
Asking on behalf of a friend...he's currently doing up his living room and asked a joiner for a quote for fitting skirting on the 4 walls and round the door frame.
All old skirtings are off and material is bought, just need cut and nailed onto wall. Room is about 4x4m.
Quote they got was £180 and will take 1 & Half days? To me i thought it would take maybe half a day?? They aren't too fussed with the cost (i still thought it was high) but more with how long it'll take?
Anyone shed some light on this? I may be well off but i thought it's a case of measure, cut, fit which can't take up too much time for a good joiner?
Cheers

Does sound high. I had a carpenter build a whole cupboard (where the ceiling over the stairs cuts off the corner of the smallest bedroom) including the door and skirting round the bottom in a day and a half, he did a nice job too, no MDF in sight. Sounds like they don't want the job so have quoted high or just filled up a gap in their diary.
It's a silly little job that will take a decent chippy an hour or two, tops.
Unfortunately it's the kind of job that'll fall into a minimum cost, which is probably what they're charging.
You won't get anyone coming round charging £15 or £20 an hour, so they'll probably have to suck it up if they're not capable of doing a very simple DIY job themselves.

Exactly this.Unfortunately it's the kind of job that'll fall into a minimum cost, which is probably what they're charging.

Any less and it wouldn't be worth it.
Are the walls flat?
Is the skirting diy shed 2.4m (meaning more work making mid-length joins) or timber merchant 4.8m?
Would he have preferred to supply his own timber/mdf?
Did the plasterer suffer from reverse vertigo, being unable to level the plaster off near the floor?
Is the door frame a dogs dinner?
Sockets - above skirting height or 2" from floor?
Loads of reasons really - or he just doesn't want the job.
