Hi all
Please see photo
I need to reduce the height of a wooden desk that has eight legs. I haven't done this type of DIY job before... don't want to use a manual saw, please can you advise what electric saw would be the easiest and cheapest to use please?

I would use a fine tooth handsaw, its only pine, and will cut easily. Some serious marking/measuring required to make sure it remains level !

Circular saw would do the job?

I've got an oscillating multi-tool which I would use for a job like that. Mine was on special offer at Argos two or three years ago for £30.

Cheap jigsaw for another option.

I'd rather just do it with a handsaw though.

Don't forget, measure once cut twice.

Definitely a handsaw or multi tool. As the legs taper, if you use a jigsaw or circular saw little cut perpendicular to the side and not parallel with the desk top.

Find something that is the same height as the amount that you want to remove off the legs, ie a book or stack up some cd cases. Then push them up to each leg and mark them with a pencil all the way round each leg. (You can't use a tri square on the tapered sides).
Then just a hand saw following the markings on all sides. A jigsaw or a circular saw would do it but I'd use a straight edge guide clamped across two legs at a time.

Handsaw.....far easier

Decide how much you need to remove and mark this measurement onto card or a piece of wood and use a a template. Cut the template to size

That way you only measure once and always use the same measurement.

I have all manner of electric saws and I'd use a manual hacksaw with a metal cutting blade for that.

If you absolutely must use an electric saw, the best bet is probably an oscilating "multi-tool" type saw with a fine metal cutting blade. Anything more aggressive than that risks splitting the wood as it exits.

I would be going manual too. A tenon or large hack saw.

A chopsaw with the stop set the the requires length then cut each leg in turn which means you cut the same off each leg.

Hand saw I'd say too

You could always have a practice go leaving the desk an inch or two higher, then if you need to adjust your technique you can have another try without leaving it too short

Tenon saw and a mitre block if you're not confident of cutting straight.

Could use a drill to make some holes in the floorboards and reduce the height that way. wink

Or dont measure at all, and cut thrice.
