Renting in central London, which areas?

Hi all,

I am looking at relocating and working in central London, at the minute I am based in South Yorkshire and don't know a great deal about the areas in central London, so I am hoping some of you Londoners can help out. I have been looking on rightmove and there are so many different areas! I am looking for a 1 bedroom flat with a small commute to Oxford Street, what would be some good areas to look into with easy access? I would be looking to spend roughly £1000-1500 pcm.

For that sort of money, I would live in Marylebone, which is just to the north of Oxford Street.

Nice area, lots of bars and restaurants, plenty of flats and houses, so not dead at the weekends. Easy to get everywhere, close to parks.

all top areas and close by (clapham is a bit further)

What you need is a nice 1-bedroom purpose built flat in a block of 8 in Battersea

I wouldn't recommend Clapham
It's a good 25 mins on the tube to Tottenham Court Road, but the main issue is that getting on the tube at Clapham Common in the morning is a nightmare (it seems to be where the new graduates go to live)

It's also overpriced IMO

You should look at:

- Camden (NW1) - West side is better towards Parkway
- Chalk Farm (NW1 / NW3)
- Belsize Park (NW3)
- NoHo (North of Soho) also known as Fitzrovia (W1)
- Marylebone (W1)
- Bloomsbury (WC1)
- Holborn (WC2)
- Clerkenwell (EC1) - basically border between West End and City

Another vote for Marylebone. It's quiet enough to seem like it's not London but not dead at weekends like Mayfair is.

Travelling in London is generally a nightmare, so you've got the right idea with a short commute. I would only look at places that are a direct commute, i.e. no need to change tube/bus/train.

Try around Balcombe St, Westminster. A friend of mine has a flat there and I believe there are others. Approx £1000 a month.
Quick look at Google 1.3 miles 9mins.

Maida Vale (W9) is very nice and convenient for Oxford Street. Has quite a leafy villagy feel in spite of being so central. I lived there for 4 years or so. Budget may be a little limiting although I suspect there are better deals out there at the moment.
