Plastering and Wallpaper Stripping advice please.
Discussion
Hi there,
Need to remove wallpaper etc for redecorating (painting) my recently purchased house.
The wallpaper is thick (wood chip?) and after the removal of an asbestos arch some of the plaster skim on the ceiling has come off along with the wallpaper. See pic:
I will be stripping the wallpaper off, but would it be easier to take it back to the board and have it skimmed and then paint over, or if I am careful would it be viable to only remove the wallpaper and fill in the area where the plaster has come away (in the pic and I would assume a few other places depending how the removal goes) myself? While I want a decent finish, I'm on a budget so if I can do bits myself I will.
Cheers.

You will probably find that a lot more skim may come off as you strip the wall paper. If that's the case then it would be better to get it skimmed.
I am doing similar today but on a wall. After stripping wall paper, I will be filling and sanding any dings/ screw holes and then putting up lining paper.
I have done this in another room and the finish is excellent.
I wouldn't be keen on putting lining paper on a ceiling though.

Thanks for your replies, the skim coming off during the whole process is what I feard and assumed. I've got to get a plasterer in anyway so not the end of the world.
I do have to remove some (atleast a rooms worth) woodchip from the walls too, so I imagine I'm going to have to do similar to you (Rollin) and fill/sand and then lining paper over it..

Never easy with woodchip, but it's quite likely the steam from removing the wallpaper is blowing the plaster. Try to remove as much as possible beforehand before you start steaming.
Plaster wise if you only have a small area blown you could sand out the edge of the blown area, pva to seal then use multi surface (or patching) plaster to fill the blown area. Level off with a straight edge against the existing plaster. Once it's started to go off smooth with a trowel. If at this stage it rubs up, spray with a little water first. Not too much though.
