We've been in our house for about 18 months now, in the time I've knocked 3 rooms into 1 kitchen, built a downstairs WC from a cupboard, installed a door and window (new lintels etc) painted the front of the house, built a long fence, built a reasonably big deck, and had a baby amongst their things.

Last week however has been awesome. Father in law started digging over an awful patch of planting about 6 weeks ago, I got bored of waiting for him to finish so took over last week, finished the digging and mixed a load of topsoil with sharp sand and leveled the area off (heavy clay base) and on Monday I seeded it.

Monday-Thursday the green seed went brown, I got depressed, decided we should have turfed it.
Friday I forgot about it and didn't even water it.
Saturday I couldn't believe it, the seed was sprouting with10-15mm shoots, after a good watering it grew about 20mm by the morning and now looks awesome.

I don't think I've done anything her as satisfying as growing this grass, it's amazing. Be a few weeks til it looks like a bowling green but I'm so proud!

Anyone else got any small jobs that have made them happier than anything else that took them 10 times longer and was 10 times harder?

Similar to the OP, we moved in last August and have been tackling some chores in the garden the last few weeks.

I de-shrubbed a border, moved some roses and in an effort to re-claim it as lawn I dug it over, mixed in some new top soil and seeded it last weekend.

Looked out on Friday morning and we've got a green haze of 1" grass shoots!
Isn't it amazing how it's dead dead dead and suddenly you've got green shoots. That sneaky seed germinating all of a sudden!
