How many of these Covid puppies will be dumped at the nearest rescue when their owners return to work? 50%+ is my guess.
With the prices I doubt many will dump them. Owners are asking serious money for problem dogs.

The demand in recuse centres is high too.

I used to volunteer at a local rescue. You would be surprised how many dogs are dumped/abandoned in early January. I don’t see the current situation being much different though I hope I am wrong.
Our dog is a rescue/rehome. I have to be honest he was hard work at the beginning, he obviously didn’t have an easy life, but he’s lying at the bottom of the bed now as happy as a pig in the proverbial.

Credit to you for that.

We have been looking at rescue centres. Our last dog came from a dog home and lived a great life. She was a really old girl when it came to that heartbreaking point. She was with us since months old.

Anything close to us in the dog homes is claimed instantly, or has serious behaviour issues.

I'd love to adopt some of the dogs, but my fear is some of the dogs are beyond us. We are no experts to teach out some serious issues. Many have been on rescue centres for a long time and they've not managed.

Lots of dogs are hitting the classifieds just a month or two after purchase. Asking prices are still sky high.

There is a lot of adverts with owners admitting that the dog hasn't been trained well and causing issues. They still want their money back.

It was quite obvious want was going to happen.
Makes me so angry.

Have to looked at the smaller rescue charities on FB. They won’t have big centres like Dogs Trust but dogs are usually in foster till the right home comes up.

My GF does homes checks for a number of the them and will demand is really high they still have lots of dogs needing homes and not all of them have massive issues.

Saw an ad on Gumtree earlier. Someone bought 2 puppies for him and his girlfriend. They have now split up and he wants the puppies 'rehoming' together but is still asking 1,800 quid EACH! They are only 8 weeks old too!

Unfortunately the situation in Ireland is so very similar to the UK

Prices for puppies here are astronomical.

The most popular site for selling dogs (Done Deal) have stopped the sale of dogs from their site in an attempt to reduce the ability to sell puppies.

No idea if it having any effect.

At only 8 weeks old they've actually got a decent chance of getting most/all of their money back. They're still "new" puppies and should have only just been rehomed so its almost like getting one from a dealer, without the waiting list (and home check and any other hoop jumping)

it just starts to get silly when you see 4,5,6 month old badly trained mistreated dogs being listed for 10 week old puppy price, its silly. I wonder what happens to all those dogs in the end.

We lost our dog three months ago and are tentatively looking for a replacement. We'll likely start looking in earnest in the new year. The first dog I enquired about was a four month old Doberman male, the price, a snip at £3k. Even people looking to rehome their dogs are asking ridiculous prices anything from £1k to £2k for what I would class as a rescue.
Maybe things will return to normal as people return to work and have less time for their dogs, I know from experience of working for the local SPCA that we were always especially busy in January. If anyone knows of a couple of Dobies in need of a new home, let me know.

I fear heaps of unwanted dogs before too long. There will be the dogs that no longer fit into people's lives when they have to go back to work. I also suspect that with the price of dogs people will be tempted into breeding. The puppy farms will be trying hard to take advantage of the high prices.

There are a few doberman rescues up and down the country. Worth checking them possibly putting your name down.

The situation is so sad. We got our pup through a friend of a friend. She’d planned a litter at the end of last year and we were lucky to get in when we did. She could have hiked up the price but she’s far too honest for that. She’s a KC registered breeder and we couldn’t have had a more lovely experience with our first ever dog.

I was out walking Lila this morning and a neighbour saw her for the first time. “Get her off the internet?” she asked - as if everything comes from the internet these days. I thought that was rather sad. She then went on to tell me she’d been ripped off by a dodgy chap who did a runner with her £300 deposit. She’s not very bright.

I'm sorry to hear about your dog.

The price of pups will return to something like normal, and decent breeders have not all jumped on the bandwagon in any event. The rescue centres will be full when people go back to work/ pup is no longer cute/realise dogs need a lot of training/find they cost alot to keep - though some of these dogs will not make the best pets as a result of their impoverished start in life . I can't countenance paying £1 to £2k to rehome one !

Good luck with your search in the new year

My other half's aunt and cousin are breeders. Have been for years, all certified to the highest standards - but to be honest I'd not have one of their puppies.

However, this year they've done insanely well. Over £250k well.

The cousin is a useless sack of ste, yet is now lording it with his two new motors, watches, holiday bookings and PS5s (three, one each for the 4 and 6 year olds, one for him).

For some people, covid has been a blessing.

As the OP a quick update to say we are yet to get a dog. We did look for a few months and that was mainly rescue centres for a dog suitable for us but nothing as yet, although the past few months we haven't been as active looking as decided now we will wait until the new year.

I'll update with some pics of course when we do in the New Year/Spring.
