Any marks or anything on the fish? And what temp?

Might be worth a post in TFF emergencies forum as I'm running out of ideas. Post your pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, tank size, occupants, how you cycled and how long since you added fish. Theres a woman who knows fish illness' backwards who hangs around in there:

"skittish" behaviour - swimming erratically and an increased number of gill beats per minute can be indicators of a toxin in the water. Are you running carbon ?.

If there are no marks on the fish, and the skittishness is the only symptom as it were then I would think there is a good chance of toxins being the culprit.

Other potential oddities include:

- faulty heater/light fitting/filter shorting electricity into the tank, so this might be worth checking also.
- faulty thermometer, check the temperature with a second thermometer and make sure that your reading is correct and is within tolerances.

If the nitrite and ammonia is 0 then there's must be something else that's causing the problem.

Like the others said, check the heater, thermometer and anything else you might think could be causing any problems.

Just to add, I'd be putting some activated charcoal in there pronto, to mop up any untested toxins.

Could just be stress, so the stress release enzymes are worth a go too.

My community tanks have always enjoyed black water tonic as a general pick-me-up/stress reliever.

Have you compared your water to the fish suppliers? Whilst you both may have water suitable for the species you have, there could be significant enough differences to cause issues.

Good luck, hope it gets sorted before further losses.

Compared tap water ammonia with tank ammonia and theyre identical at 0, 0 nitrite, highish nitrates which im changing water for every 2 days.

Well I was down to 1 platy, 3 neons, 6 harlequins, 5 panda corys, 2 keyholes, 2 plecs until my cousin gave me his unwanted platys (1 male, 1 gravid female and 1 juvenile female).

Hopefully the dying will stop since I cant work out why!

Check your water against the aquatic shop's. Differences there may be the key.

In fact, most decent suppliers will offer water testing to a much higher level of detail/accuracy, so its worth taking a sample of tank water in.

I certainly wouldn't be adding more stock until everything is settled - its not fair on the new fish, nor will it help the existing fish cope.

Every fish shop I've been in has just used the API freshwater master test kit - a very good kit, but nothing special. Most fishkeepers I know have the same kit.

As for differences between the two, if you're in roughly the same geographical area chances are it'll be similar, and even if it's not whilst the shock of adjusting might have accounted for a few initial deaths if it continues then I'd suggest it's not the cause.

Agree about not taking on more fish though, but it's too late in any case. Hopefully the worst is past.

Don't get me wrong - i know adding more fish so soon would be bad. My cousin was literally 'getting rid' so i accepted the fish.

Levels are all still fine and no deaths in 2 days. No fish are acting strange currently. My plants *should* be there when i get in from work tonight to try and help with the nitrates. No more fish will be added for at least a week and a half and that is entirely dependant on no more deaths.

You should NOT put anymore fish in. You need to get the tank sorted first. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be an arse, I just want to help.

I add fish no closer than 4 weeks, and that was when I was adding my school of cardinals.

You shouldn't be in such a rush to get the tank stocked. Get the levels sorted and then add fish every month.

I'm not in any rush. Just finished a 50% WC to bring the nitrates down before my (bloody meant to be here yesterday!) plants arrive to try and take control of that issue.

Thanks! It's settling in nicely now. Deaths have stopped (Except for one rogue harlequin today that randomly started spinning around, no signs of anything wrong with it so maybe just stressed when I rescaped?)

Think I might have accidentally sent a Panda Cory to deathrow.. Little fella swam into my siphon tube when I was cleaning and got stuck sideways. Stopped the suction within a second and got him out, but he's got a ripped dorsal fin and is sitting at the bottom panting frown
