Things have changed since I started this thread, I still dislike animals but now have a little boy who is nearly 2 that is absolutely fascinated by them.

My weekends seem to be filing up with trips to children's farms, I've held off with the disgusting stinking zoo and safari parks so far but it's just a matter of time frown

He's going to want a pet soon isn't he?

Yes, he will.

I've put up with Mrs Pints' cat for the past decade, and a couple of fish to keep her happy. (The cat or the missus? You decide.)

A couple of weeks ago I was hauled off to the pet shop and each of the HalfPints are now in possession of dwarf hamsters. banghead
I've already done the zoo visit and the occasional visits to local farms. Nobody said being a parent was easy or without sacrifice.

But kids grow up and, in most cases, become less disgusting. Animals stay that way.

This takes longer than your average pets life span though...

I'd say it's the other way round. Kids grow up & get worse, animals are great companions at any age. Says me trying to type with one hand as our Staffy has decided my other hand is a great pillow to sleep on hehe

I'm sort of with the OP on this one. I wouldn't say I hate animals but I find them very irritating, to the extent that there are certain people whose houses I avoid going to because I know they have a particularly slobbery dog or irritating cat. All cats are irritating actually. I like certain dogs if they're running around a beach or a big garden, but people who keep them cramped up in small houses I don't understand.

Goldfish and hamsters I can tolerate but one person I knew had ferrets and they stank to high heaven.

I like cats, they are low maintenance and quite amusing at times, but I really don't like dogs.

The stuff that goes in the front, comes out the back, constant need for attention, and the horrible wet noses that they insist on thrusting towards you at every opportunity.

And of course the ones that jump up on you and run towards you where the owners say "he is just playing" grumpy

So it is safe so say I am not a dog person! I just avoid them as much as possible.

Giving your own species lesser priority than animals feels very unenlightened to me regardless of what you think of some of its members! Same for those who put their own life in jeopardy to save an animal. Its totally perverse to risk a human life for an animal's in any circumstance! Go ahead and save your baby (or somebody else's) from a burning building but leave the dog I implore you.
My dog fell 10 feet or so into deep water, she clearly couldn't get out herself so I jumped in and swam along with her to a lower part where we could could get back out. I didn't even really think about it, I followed her in just like I'd have done if it had been anyone in my family who fell in.

If some random old lady fell in I wouldn't have cared. And certainly wouldn't have went in after her. I know that sounds awful but I'm not risking my life for someone I don't know, especially a pensioner.

Eh, so you'd stand there and watch someone potentially die?

Without doubt one of the most backwards posts I have ever read on PH.

I'd try and get them out with a stick or a rope or something - I'm not going to stand there laughing at them. But I'm not going to risk going in myself either.

It's not so much if you like animals, but do animals like you?

For the last 35 years I have had either a German Shepard or a Doberman and if they don't like "you" then you are no good. If after an introduction, if they still bark, growl, stand back and stare, then I know your off.

Works 100% of the time. At times with certain people, I didn't want to believe it, but those people always turn out bad.

Animals are a gift.
Or a meal.

Bit of a sweeping statement not to like animals. Lots of animals I don't like, but lots I do. I like my dog for example, but not my neighbours - so do I like dogs or not?

Can't fking stand pet cats though (not tigers etc).

I like nearly all species of animal - their anatomy and physiology is fascinating in terms of how they've adapted to their environments.
And they help you see the world from a different perspective.

Owners of dogs never realise their houses smell awful, but I guess they get used to it and don't notice.

You might have a point. HalfPints mk1 (aged 5 and a half) is sitting next to me on the sofa dropping guts and grinning like a Cheshire cat as she does so. grumpy
