Useful info for wire owners / prospective owners
This is going to be really random but I'd not heard of so this type of epilepsy so I thought I'd look it up, inadvertently I think I've just diagnosed it in my parents elderly poodle. He fits all of the behaviours being described. I've just contacted my vet. Not that there is much we can do now (except maybe his diet, though he"s a fussy bugger!) as he is 16 now and it is progressing slowly. I thought it was because he had poor sight that caused his jerky behaviour in daylight/ sunlight!
Awe Bex that's sad, it's such a horrid condition. I'm sure if you wanted to chat then Gill would be willing - she's been through it with one of hers, he is the dog in the vid on the website, - made me sob uncontrollably. I have been trying to learn more because I own a wire. Weirdly I currently work for a human epilepsy organisation.
It's a bit of a shock if it is but also answers quite a lot. He copes quite well but ironically we'd said in the past that if anyone saw him they'd think he was having a fit, we just never thought of it as being so because it was just in sunlight. He was going to be put to sleep when he was 12 but my vet refused (he didn'd show signs then, just poor sight) so he's had several extra years of a good life. If my vet agrees that he does have this at least I can understand what is happening if he worsens, (which sadly I think he is)

Alfie the Dachs who takes an age to get out of his bed was sad to watch though. Teddy isn't anywhere like that yet.

Anyway apologies to OP for the thread hi jack, just a bit taken aback re: all this!

Hi Bex, the reason I posted the lafora website is because its more prevalent in wire dachsies than anything and many owners/breeders/vets don't know much about it. There is a testing programme and genetic database of affected/clear/carriers that's starting to emerge which may really help prospective owners....

I'm so sorry that your family dog is suffering from this awful condition but at least if you know what it is you can help avoid triggers and help her be less frightened and more comfortable. X

Thanks for all the infomation and contacts.Friends have found one to go and look at.They are an elderly couple so hence the requirement for a mature dog. They have always had standard size before but will pass the information on here re the minatures.
Bex sorry to hear about your parents dog he is certainly a good age for a poodle.

Thanks again one and all.
