My cat wants to play fetch
Discussion
My old Siamese played fetch
So did Chilli, and now so does Pepi (both Serengetti).
Never taught any of them, they've just brought what they wanted thrown and dropped it at our feet, then pawed us til we threw it - the further the better Pepi likes having his mouse thrown up over the stair bannister. Chilli liked cardboard/credit cards

I had a cat that liked the plastic covered wire ties that you used to get with sliced bread packets. She would take it to a part of the room that had some sort of vinyl surface (the rest was carpet) and there she would paly with it for a while until she had managed to knock it under a pice of furniture. Then I would have to retrieve it while she crouched ready to pounce on it when it came back into sight.
"Burmese maintain kitten interests and energy throughout their adulthood and are very athletic and playful. In some instances they even retrieve items as part of a game."
same here, i've got a black Burmese type cat that used to bring garden sticks in for you to swish around the floor whilst it chases them.
And you can also get a conversation going by miaowing back to them.

My 6 month-old cat does this too, but only when she feels like it and only for a short period of time. If she wants to play then she'll fetch whatever it is she feels like playing with and drop it at my feet. I then throw it and she'll bring it back, but only a few times. If I fail to respond to the item being dropped at my feet then she will tap me on the leg and run away, this will escalate to biting if I don't respond again
Most of the time she's more interested in tearing newspapers to bits and running around the living room at 100mph though

A great thread.
One of our old cats (boddington) used to retrieve things that got shot in the garden.
As much as mum wasnt too keen on me shooting pigeons, i used to as they shat everywhere.
Boddy would be fast asleep in the conservatory, as soon as he saw the gun, he would be up, and would retrieve the bird from a good 70 yards away, bring it straight back to you, roll over and make a huge din until you gave him some fuss.
Alas, this was almost always the time that the mother would arrive to provide a bking, so i used to stash the gun behind the chair, and try and blame the poor fella.
Bizarre creature was boddington. His sister-stella- did nothing of the sort, and even my beloved lakeland terrier- murphy- couldnt be bothered to fetch things.
He also used to follow me when walking murphy- anything up to 2 miles from home, would run around with murphy, go in the river to follow him, then head back with us.
He eventually moved next door as they had 4 female cats, and lorded it up there for the next 6 years.

We had a Siamese cat who used to follow me when walking our mongrel. Dog used to look at me as if to say "why do I have to be on a lead?" - because if he wasn't the cat would chase him off into the distance (play fighting). This cat also used to hide under my car and attack other dogs when being walked past our house. One of our old cats (boddington) used to retrieve things that got shot in the garden.

Siamese are tough cats and the most 'dog like'. My Mum now breeds Burmese and most of them are slightly unhinged, when it comes to replacing Tommy our Maine Coon (8.5kg of, er, muscle) I'm not going to be having one of hers!

My driver's mate was telling me about one of his kittens (the "clever" one) doing this. Going out and getting little twigs from the garden for him to throw for her.
Bloody cats, coming over here, stealing our dogs' jobs...

My Burmese doesn't do fetch yet but I'm working on it. (in between tasting its cat food)
It seems quite common for them to initiate the game. I guess this falls in line with "cats don't have owners, the have slaves".

My next door neighbour has 2 Main Coons, 1 Burmese and another Tabby. They don't let them out any more after my last one though.Gassing Station | All Creatures Great & Small | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
