That assumes that you have had the dog since 8 weeks old. Many of us have not and now need to deal with issues that have been caused by other people. Some breeds such as gun dogs seem to be naturally OK with loud noises. Others not so...

Mine wants to run off and bring back a pheasant every time one goes off.

I find this quite strange because its a Yorkshire terrorist terrier, not a lab.

It has also been shown that dogs can develop a phobia up until the age of 2. So any dog has the potential to develop a problem that previously seemed to cope fine. Not all owners have the experience to recognise the early signs of a problem.

Though I agree early exposure can help, if done correctly else a problem can be created

Yes a valid point. But I feel the cycle should be attempted to be broken.
I think I'm at odds to the general consensus but there are an awful lot of posts "What should I get for a new pup" or similar.
Again the work you do is admirable and is probably mainly a result of inappropriate owners /breeds.
Call me old fashioned ( I don't deny it). I've had my say. Hopefully someone somewhere will think again and as a result a dog will have a better life and you will have one less problem on your hands.

I leave the TV on all evening at a reasonable level and shut the curtains. That seems to be enough for the bunnies.

We try and prevent a problem by holding puppy parties and advising on this type of thing and using an increase of noises in the sessions. Hopefully we help smile

Bumped as just seen someone has posted asking for help re fireworks. Not able to link it from my phone to the other thread.

OOPS.... I really want this in the all creatures great and small forum, could a mod move it please, didn't realise I'd originally started it in the lounge forum.

Seriously? You're worried about a dog cowering because of a few days of fireworks? I think maybe you've got too much time on your hands or something, it's a dog, not an elderly person, put things into perspective and realses it's hardly something worth posting about.

You should call the President on the red phone, Im sure he'd be horrified to hear your dog might be scared for a few nights becuase of some loud bangs. If your dog is such a wimp, try attaching a large firework to it's back, stand it on a skateboard, and sent it shooting down the road. The trauma of that will make a few fireworks pale into insignificance.

Oh come on, it's just a dog!! I know they're companionship for some people etc but really, putting them on such a pedastil is a bit silly. It'll have a few nights of some fireworks, then be fine, and if you dont want non dog lover types adding their opinion put it in the pets forum, I would assume people who dont have some strange love affair with an animal dont go on there.

I have come accross some people who are so precious about their dogs it gets rediculous, some perspective wouldnt go amis sometimes.

Well how about this perspective. Some dogs are terrified of loud noises, and if you can do something simple that costs next to nothing to alleviate their suffering why wouldn't you? No putting on a pedestal, no strange love affair, just a little basic human compassion.

Dogs feel fear just as we do, only difference is they can't rely on reason or knowledge to stop feeling scared.

Also why do I not trust people who don't like Dogs? Weird.

Tokoloshe,

You are such a massive cock to write what you have in your previous two posts.

Why reply to a post about dogs when you clearly don't like them?

This sort of obvious trolling should get you a ban of some sort in my opinion.

I wouldnt trust someone who doesnt love an animal, or talk to it, or calls it part of their family, either, I mean, they must be mad right?

Because I thought someone should add some eprspective. yes, a dog feels fear, but I dont think a night a year of sme fireworks is something to get all concerned about.

Dogs are alright, I just dont get this whole "member of the family" "has feeling too" type of nonsense, it's an animal, not a person, so do you think people who treat a dog like one of their family, and a person, are all there???

Who me ?

I'd have put it stronger .I've got a rescue dog -rescued at eight year old - no history ,but he gets terrified of flashing lights ( possibly because his family of eight year had to go into hospital and him into kennels -and goes mad if you take a flashphoto of him . His hearing is keen - he's a Cairn Terrier ,bred to take vermin in rough cover -where hearing is an asset .He can detect callers / cats a long distance from the house ,so what does a loud bang do to his senses . But like others on here , to me he's not a pet -he's family - if he gets upset ,it's up to me to do something about it .The sort of prat (spelt with an I and deletion of k ,to be replaced with ck) might just ask themselves what action they'd take if this sort of yib(I always mistake my I and A too when typing.) targeted some elderly relation .

Stop trolling.

If you cannot understand how people feel about their pets then the last place you should be posting is this section of the forum. smile
