It's Caturday- Post some cats (vol 3)

I agree, and many people do. It's just that I can't.
I have a picture of my cat in the wall. Every time I look at him, I realise that I can't.
It's not right or wrong. It just is.
I still love cats and I love other people's cats. And random cats that turn up in my garden. But I can't devote myself to owning one again, at least not for a very long time to come.
Maybe part of it is selfish....I perhaps don't want to put myself through that heartbreak again. Sadly that horrible day always comes, as witnessed by this thread, which is both joyous and terribly upsetting in equal measure, it is full of happy stories of cats but also sad stories of them dying.
Apologies. I'm buggering the thread up. As you were.
I reckon one day, you'll be sitting there, minding your own business, and a stray will walk in. You'll both look at each other, and then you'll know that this time it's different.I have a picture of my cat in the wall. Every time I look at him, I realise that I can't.

I will agree, that is entirely possible. If it happens, it happens. After all.....that's how I got my previous cat....I will 'know' at that point that it is 'meant to be'.
So the four week period has elapsed and we let Dexter out for the first time today. For the first few minutes he stayed in our garden and we breathed a sigh of relief.
Then he hopped over next door's fence and then it all went wrong! Within a couple of minutes there was a horrible noise of two cats...seems he has taken an instant dislike to the neighbour cat....
I eventually got him in by diving into next doors bushes like a lunatic, but fair to say the entire experience didn't go so well! They were about six feet from each other in a Mexican stand off!
Am I meant to just relax and leave them to work out their differences/establish boundaries?
The neighbours cat is used to (I guess) having roam of the three or four adjoining gardens so probably isn't best pleased with the new kid on the block. Dexter was a stray for three years so probably adept at scrapping for food etc. Bit worried as to what to do from here, I can't be running every 5 minutes to break up cat fights!

It's really hard but you have to let them sort themselves out, or have a housecat! The neighbours cat is used to (I guess) having roam of the three or four adjoining gardens so probably isn't best pleased with the new kid on the block. Could cause bad feelings with the neighbour.....
If they really don't get on I have heard of arrangements where one cat is let out in the morning, the other in the evening etc. but that's a last resort.
Hopefully they'll learn to tolerate each other.
At least it shows Dexter thinks it's his territory and is planning to stay around!

We had the same problem when we moved to our current house. Our moggie was not well received by next door's but now they live in mutual ignorance. Any new cat in the area, though, gets short shrift from either/both of them. There's a female cat next door too, but she's away with the fairies most of the time...Then he hopped over next door's fence and then it all went wrong! There's no way on earth he could be a house cat! He's been stir crazy from the moment we got him home! Three years of stray life I guess is a hard habit to break!
We are going to go and talk to the neighbours this morning and explain the situation - hopefully this way we can avoid it developing into any bad situation with them. They are the house that backs on to our garden (a different road) so we've never actually spoken to/met them....will be a fun first introduction...
'Hi, our cat seemingly wants to destroy yours, hope that's cool!'

Just been round for a chat with the neighbours, and it turns out 'Bob' is not neutered....that's going to explain the aggression between them then.
I've just noticed Dexter has a bit of blood on one of his front paws
Urgh, this is going to be messy.
People that don't get their pets "sorted" in this way annoy the crap out of me. I've just noticed Dexter has a bit of blood on one of his front paws
Urgh, this is going to be messy.

They will sort their own st out, once the willy waving is over, each will know his place & territory. I've just noticed Dexter has a bit of blood on one of his front paws

Moglet used to hate our neighbours cat when it first dared to venture into the garden. They now mince about together all the time lay in the sun like they are having some sort of bromance. Apart from the bum sniffing incident where Mogelt weighed him in they have been just fine.

I'm pretty 'live and let live' but it strikes me as pretty irresponsible. Especially as he seemed almost proud of the fact that he was aggressive/boisterous.Ah well, as above, hopefully when the willy waving is over, things will settle down. In better news he went out again during the day, disappeared three seperate times out of the garden and came back each time. Even climbed next door's tree for good measure!
But I think he likes his garden
I've bought Lebowski a new harness and we have just been for our first romantic moonlit walk.
He walked so well and loved the night air, ears pricked and alert, chatting away with an ocassional loud growl. He's such a joy to own. It's probably a bonus I live in a tiny village where all the residents already think I'm slightly unhinged.

Don't feel bad for how you feel, we are all different in how we deal with the loss of a much loved four legged friend, you have to do what is right for you.
I will just say we never replace. No one would ever be able to replace (nor would I want them too) my dear Fitz who has been gone 3yrs now. He was an incredible little soul and was a truly special little cat but I will in time consider another (we still have our Maine Coon Lucy who would not want to share with another cat again) we lost our whippet Jimmy almost 3yrs to the day (June 3Rd) I still cry over his loss, still wish he was here, still talk about him loads but we do have 2 whippets in our lives bringing their own joy and pleasures.
My point is you have to listen to yourself not be pressured by anyone else but that many of us experience what you are going through and we do find a way to eventually find space in our hearts for another. Take care.
Bex is right, you can never replace a much loved cat; just like you can't replace a person. They're all specialI will just say we never replace. But, you can open your heart to another that can help heal the loss.

Our 4 have made a great start in doing that though, Thor is a teddy bear who demands cuddles, Freya is a mischievous little girl who chats back at you if you tell her off, Fester is a sweet, shy boy who gives headbutts to tell you he is hungry and Gomez is a tiny little boy who shouts a lot and loves belly rubs. They are all beautiful kitties and I am grateful they are in my life.
My cat likes plastic bags. Every time a bag ends up on the floor it slips inside, turns around then puts its head through the handle.
Funny when she gets spooked and bombs out through the cat flap wearing it.
Edit.. No idea why the pics are not rotated. That's mobile phones for you.

Some damn fine kitties in this thread
here are my coons, they are 2 in august, so a couple more years of growing yet
General Custard the third, he loves to sit on my shoulders as i walk about, the downside is hes quite large and heavy
well he would look large if it was not for his brother "big paws"
hes not really much of a lap cat, on the grounds that our laps are not big enough lol
invetigating, it takes a while to get around corners
