Just off the phone to a mate who’s a police officer and responded to an XL bully attack on a 5 year old boy tonight. He’s been in a lot of stty situations and tonight was one of the worst for him.

The dog scalped the little boy, skull showing and blood everywhere. He had to use a bloody riot shield with a taser to subdue the thing.

Dog owner was a scumbag women who the dog was too powerful for, both her and her friend were helpless as it attacked her friends little boy.

Honestly anyone who keeps these dogs need there head checked.

Awful.

I do feel that people who have these dogs and think they wouldn't hurt a fly are playing with fire.

Hope the hapless couple who owns that dog get a lengthy prison sentence.

Don't hold your breath... Under new regulations the first conviction has happened, April in Worthing... chap had a home bred, unregistered XL Bully - Told the police that we're investigating another matter that it would attack if approached... Magistrates imposed a one-year community order, requiring him to complete 100 hours of unpaid work. He was ordered to pay £85 costs and a £114 surcharge and the court also imposed an order for the destruction of the dog, pending an appeal.

So much for 'tough' restrictions.

Where did this happen? I'm trying to find something on the news about it.

The one where a 5yr old girl was badly mauled near me was only reported in local media a month ago.

You'd be surprised at how many occur - you'd have to have a special dedicated section in the national press if all were.

Exactly. This one was local to me. The two XL Bullys involved had already attacked and killed a dog in a local park.

Sad situation. Does XL bully type mean that they're not sure of the breed?

I think the police will often say "XL Bully type" until the breed is confirm by a vet or other expert.

Funnily enough that’s part of the issue, they vary in look so much but they will always have a general look about them.

I’ve seen dogs seized for being pitbulls, some of those judging what a pitbull is wouldn’t know one from a xl bully tbh as that’s what’s often pictured when referring to pitbulls.

I'm leery of the 'type' category because pit bulls are often misidentified, especially in negative circumstances. Remember that the Iraq war started because of that 'look'.

The DNA test used above is the one run by Mars. I used this test on my Patterdale Terrier. For those who do not know, a Patterdale is not a recognised breed, it is just a type. It originated in the Lake District (hence its name) and is descended from among others, mainly the Lakeland Terrier with other breeds such as the Whippet, Staffordshire and Bedlington Terriers.

The DNA result came back with 5% Staffy, 3% Whippet, 2% Bedlington, 8% Lakeland and a long list of other breeds all at less than 5%.

The main 'ingredient' at 43% was Patterdale Terrier!!!

An absolutely and totally meaningless 'DNA' result.

It’s not as if the owners don’t know what these dogs are like and what they’re capable of. Wake the fk up!

I guess it’s better it’s the owners of these ‘fur babies’ are being killed by them, as opposed to the general public.

Seems to be more young female owners than you’d expect, really strange choice of dog imho.

Careful, I said almost exactly that (your first sentence) and someone on here decided to take offense and went crying to the ph police. I do agree though, far better the owners than anyone else. Also the more this happens, further action will be necessary.

Second sentence - maybe they get them for protection..
