Thanks Gary and Jessie. I'm really not very hopeful; think we need to take her to the vets tomorrow. I suspect there's something sinister going on.She is okay in most respects, but we just cannot get/keep any weight on her no matter what we feed her. We've been trying all sorts and still she is painfully thin, she looks like she's been starved
Another symptom of old age, I guess, but I've never had a dog this bad before.
Not going to post a photo but Archie’s now suitably peeved at having to wear a cone of shame. You know I mentioned a tennis ball sized tumour on his lower jaw the other day? Well, whilst me and SWMBO were off to Tesco he decided it was irritating him so started scratching it. I reckon one of his claws caught and ripped it open - we got home to what looked like a scene from a Sam Peckinpah movie with blood everywhere - over him, the floor, the walls, everywhere he walked it was dripping like a tap.
Anyway, we cleaned him up and called the vet who said to put some frozen peas on it to stem the bleeding which it has done. Whilst me and daughter went to the pet shop to buy said cone, he’d managed to catch it again so we came home to a red legged dog. Cone of shame now applied, hopefully it’ll be healed up in a day or two. What a way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon, although Archie’s now fast asleep on his favourite rug by the front door.
Dogs! Who’d have them (we all would, obviously!)?

Manuka honey works remarkbly well at healing bleeding wounds that you cannot plaster or stitch.
Our 16 year old Spaniel Sky has a tumour under her chin that she scratches just to annoy us, and it bleeds everywhere when she does.
She's too old for surgery now.
Manuka honey works remarkably quickly at sealing the wound.
It seems expensive when you buy it, but it lasts a good long time as you don't need to apply much.
My wife reminded me the other day that we healed a gaping hole in a horse's armpit (yes, I know horses don't have arms, but you know what I mean) a number of years ago after the vet had cocked up (technical medical term for veterinary incompetence) a sarcoid treatment and left her with a bleeding wound in an impossible place to heal.
Pictures of Sky when younger and horse (Miss Deeds) as this is a photos thread
Sky was tidying up Norfolk that day.

Hope he gets better soon
So after yesterday’s episodes I was hoping we could get through to tea time and reassess, however, despite the cone, waking up to a kitchen and dog covered in blood we’ve had to make the hardest decision ever. We can’t let him carry on forever tasting his own blood, it’s a situation that’s not going to get any better so at 5:40 this afternoon he’ll be making his final trip out the car.
I cannot begin to tell you how much in bits I am over this - life truly is hard and this is affecting us more than I ever thought it would. Archie is and will always be the best friend I’ve ever had and I will miss him greatly.
The first and last pics are just about 12 years apart.

No, not Archie surely…I cannot begin to tell you how much in bits I am over this - life truly is hard and this is affecting us more than I ever thought it would. Archie is and will always be the best friend I’ve ever had and I will miss him greatly.

How devastating - genuine tears in the eye.
I am so sorry.

Sad things!
So sorry to hear that! It’s always a hard decision, but in his condition, the sooner you can get him comfortable the better.
I wish we could do that same for humans.
Archie will happy to be with you to his last moment though.
It’s worth the pain for the 12years of fun and frolics.
