Cat pee problems!
Discussion
We have two cats; both about 12 years old, one boy (with struvite crystals but been on Hills c/d for years) and one girl. We've had thenm about 6 years and have lived in this house for about 4-5 years.
For some reason one of them has decided to start peeing on the kitchen worksurface![frown](/inc/images/frown.gif)
It's happened 3 times so far, but I can't figure out which one it is.
There has been a bit of upset recently; new flooring, worksurface, cooker etc. (with a builder in for 2-3 weeks), the boy cat got in a fight and had to go onto antibiotics a couple of weeks ago but all healthy now, and they had their jabs about 3 weeks ago (boy cat also had blood tests for kidney function which was all healthy and good). I have caught the girl up on the worksurface looking for food, but haven't caught her "in the act" of weeing.
The vet's nurse suggested if we can identify which one it is, then do urinary tests (to check for crystals etc.) Also suggested putting a litter tray inside to see if that helps (it hasn't).
Question is - how on earth do we identify which one is doing it !?
It happened last night for the 3rd time - just a little line (wiggly line) over a towel (which was over a bowl of water) and a few drips in the corner. I've just put kitchen foil on there to try and get an audible alert and try and discourage them.
Any ideas? I do have a webcam somewhere perhaps could try that - any ideas how to record the output or set up motion sensor!

Keep them out of the kitchen, if that fails cover with tin foil (
) or put a shallow tray of water down, or double sided sticky tape - which will also inconvinience you ![frown](/inc/images/frown.gif)
Treat both for cystitus - it is difficult to get samples!
Sprinkle Zyklene over their food to help settle them after the work that has been done, tis most likely stress.

Aww thanks Ali. Still need to try and keep visits here down but I think I will balance it a bit better now I've had a break!
OP hope everything settles soon, there's lots can be done to sort it out but ck'ing the urine (poss for both cats) will give a good indication of what's causing it.

Hi - OP here (posting from husband's account as my laptop is now setup with webcam focused on the kitchen counter!)
Can't keep the out of the kitchen as it's an open plan house, and I cna't lock one in a bedroom as it's not happening every day - so far it's about once a week.
I also thought of the boy, but I've just never seen him on the counter. I suggested getting a sample from both (granules in the litter tray) but the nurse is keen to figure out which one it is before doing the testing. No symptoms of being ill from the boy, but I am keeping an eye on him as I know the crystals can be dangerous.
Hoping the webcam will provide some enlightenment, otherwise we'll be testing both I guess![frown](/inc/images/frown.gif)
The products you mention - are they the pheremone type things?
PS hi Bex I have seen you post on hee before![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)
And thanks to all for responses so far!

I agree with the nurse you would need to know which cat, so it would have to be separate samples if testing both. They could do a cystocentesis on the most likely candidate, prob a bit more costly but it'd be a fresh sample and no doubt as to who the sample was from.
My boy cat sprayed due to stress several yrs ago. I would not have believed it was him as it was over the toaster (yuck!) and he didn't jump on work surfaces normally, until I caught him doing it!
Feliway = Pheremone
Zylkene = Natural milk protein product which contains enzymes that have calming influence. Sounds a bit out there but they do work.
There are lots of products to help with urinary problems (natural) but would need to see what the problem is fitrst to know it they'd help.
