Monty normally gets fed Whiskas pouches, one morning and one evening. He also has IAMS dry food in a bowl available all day.

Recently has has been ignoring the wet food and just munching the IAMS instead. There obviously isn't anything wrong with him, as he is still eating well and is his normal self, he just seems to have gone off the wet food.

I have bought some cheap frozen white fish fillets that I have been cooking and feeding him which he seems to love (and doesn't cost much). It it a viable and healthy option to feed him a small bit of fish and leave him to eat the dry food in the long run?

Any advice welcome!

I am not a vet/vet nurse so I apologise if I am wrong, but I am fairly sure that a cat does not need any wet food in their diet. A previous cat of ours had kidney/bladder problems (many years ago) and was only allowed dry food.

We took our current cat to the vet for her yearly innoculations a couple of weeks ago. The vet asked what we fed her - 1/2 small tin morning and evening, and always have dry food available. She said that was fine but not to increase the wet food, as the dry food is far better for her teeth. We have actually reduce it to 1/3 tin morning and evening now and she seem perfectly happy with this.

I would have thought that boiling a small piece of plain fish/chicken is fine for your cat. I am sure Bex will be along later and will tell what is best.

Btw - beautiful cat.

I wouldn't give a cat white fish. It's salty and has no beneficial omega oils in it.

I hear all the arguments for wet/dry, but can't believe it is ever good to feed a cat exclusively dry food. Thirst is a weak signal in cats, and I can't help thinking you're storing up problems for a neutered male, which are prone to urinary blockages.

That said, I'd rather a good quality dried than a poor quality wet. Whiskas is dreadful stuff - full of cereals and sugar.

Meat (or the closest thing to it) is the best diet for a cat. I hedge my bets with the wet/dry argument and feed both. A Lily's Kitchen tray plus 25g dried Applaws in the morning, plus the raw trimmings of whatever I'm having in the evening - salmon, chicken, steak redface etc.

Last thing at night, Bob gets a cm of 'Logic' oral hygiene gel to lick off my finger. He won't let me clean his teeth, so this has to do. His former owners let his teeth get into a terrible state, and I'm sure that's because they fed him crap food.

Hope this helps. Monty looks like a magnificent animal, who deserves the very best.

I was recommended white fish for my diabetic cat as an alternative to wet food as he couldn't stand the prescription wet food, he loves the Pollock fillets he gets for his dinner and seems to be doing fine.

Agree completely!

Bex & JasandJules will be along shortly to properly advice (£20 that J&J advises raw feeding! hehe) on the merits of white fish

I'll take that Bet.... No wait, I won't.........

As Ali and others say, raw fish is fine for cats. Ours enjoy Salmon and basically whatever might be on offer at the shops... We also feed them raw rabbit (sometimes as in a rabbit leg, sometimes minced), chicken mince, chicken wings (to chew on), kidneys, hearts, lumps of beef to chew on too. And the odd chick.
