Hello,

I'm looking for some advice regarding a pet insurance claim that was rejected.

Our vets have a puppy deal (vaccines, microchip etc) which included a months free insurance - which we took.

Puppy had to go to vets for a dodgy stomach during this period. All visits to vets were within the free month.

After this month, we renewed our insurance, albeit with a 3 day gap in cover.

The vet submitted claim and it has been rejected. They are now expecting us to cough up the fees.

Where do I go from here?

Key Points:
Dog did not visit vets during break in cover, and nothing was claimed during these days.
Insurance has not paid for anything during free month.
Subsequent claims after renewal were accepted and paid.

Thanks

Unfortunately even a one day break will scupper continuation cover.

All you can do is see if your vets will put in an appeal on your behalf.

I am a bit confused though. When did the dodgy tummy occur? Did the condition carry on after the 4 weeks were up?

The vets may be able to find out more in your behalf as long as you give the ins company permission to discuss the case with your vets.

Are the subsequent claims that they've paid out for the same problem?

Every treatment/visit for dodgy stomach was within the 30 day free trial. When we renewed they said it wouldn't be covered for 12 months, which is fine.

I cannot understand how it is fair to not pay in this situation.

All claims for tummy problems were within trial. Any claims after this were unrelated.

Does this clear things up?

No because I do not understand why they haven't paid out either.

I would definitely get your vets to find out more. You will have to pay an excess even with the free cover.

Which company is it if you don't mind me asking?

Pet plan.

Not sure if I'm allowed to say on here. Hopefully a mod will only delete this post if so!

Shouldn't be a problem. If your vets is a pet plan practice, they should already have permission to take up the case on your behalf if they want to. The least you deserve is a clear reason for the refusal.

Pet Plan are usually very reliable so there must be a good reason for them to decline it as this is unusual for them.

What reason have they given to not pay up?

Most pet insurance policies contain a clause in the terms and conditions that says that veterinary costs will not be covered for a pet illness that occurs within the first fourteen days from when the policy starts. An injury to your pet is normally covered from day one.

I suggest you read the policy terms and conditions. If such a clause is in the terms and conditions (I suspect that it will be) and your first visit was within fourteen days of the policy start date then that is probably why they are not paying out.

If such a clause is not in the policy terms and conditions or there is such a clause and your first visit was after the fourteen day period then sorry, haven`t a clue why they are not paying out!
