I'm going to be travelling to Birmingham on a fairly regular basis for the forseeable future (live in Scotland) so looking for restaurant and hotel recommendations to make things as pleasant as possible.

I'm fairly committed to IHG group for hotels but would consider changing for something compelling. Needs to be walking distance to New Street Station.

Last week I had a curry at Asha's which was excellent but not sure it was worth the money. I'm not bothered about sitting in such polished surroundings, more into the tastiness of the food.

Cheers

Crowne Plaza in Solihull.

Yes, I know walking distance from New Street, bear with me. A short walk from New St takes you to Moor St Station. A couple of stops down the line and you're in Solihull. You can walk to the CP in ten mins from there.
Right opposite the CP is Touchwood shopping centre with lots of options from chain eateries or straight through and you're in Solihull town centre with more options.

The CP from New St should be less than £20 in a cab if you don't fancy changing trains.

The Dehli is a fabulous curry house in Solihull by the way.

Can recommend this place - https://www.henandchickens.co.uk/

Edit to add is practically opposite a Hampton by Hilton hotel

Not sure I’d want to be 30 minutes out of town, when the criteria is near New Street station…

My suggestion - Staybridge Suites are IHG, reasonably priced and in the centre of town (maybe 5 minutes walk from New Street). They’re clean, rooms are a reasonable size.

If you fancy a burger, the meat shack does great ones.

Don’t think it’s worth travelling to Solihull from Brum, loads of great places to eat and drink in Birmingham.

There're a few decent places to eat in and around The Mailbox and along the canal behind it.

I've always quite like the following places:

Decent food and beer:
https://www.indianbrewery.com/

No trip to brum is complete without going to the Welly!
https://www.thewellingtonrealale.co.uk/

Post Office Vaults also quite cool for a drink or three
https://www.postofficevaults.co.uk/

The Good Intent is also good for drinks.

Sorry not many food recommendations! But plenty to find on Google with decent reviews

Also Staybrigdge Suites is a good shout, stayed there a couple of times

Thanks, some really helpful suggestions there!

Last night I went to The Indian Brewing Co. which was pretty good. Their Faat Naans are a fun alternative to a standard curry.

This time I'm in the Crowne Plaza city centre but will give Staybridge Suites a try next time.

I'd second Stalybridge Suites.

There's a place immediatelya round the back that does great Donner kebabs, and there's also an "Awesome Chips round the corner smile

Depending on how much you actually like Hotels - have a look at the apartments at 8 Waterloo St. Very central location, comfortable and a separate living room / kitchen. Not expensive. You can still eat out in restaurants if you want, or get takeaways and not stink out your bedroom. You could even cook.

I work in B'ham, and some colleagues have used Staybridge and been very happy. Although given the location I'd probably still pick the Crowne Plaza if in Budget as it's a much shorter walk to most of the restaurant areas.

thumbup Agreed.

Good lunch spot right by New St - Grand Central Kitchen opposite the tram stops. Eat in or take-away, it's one of our mainstays for a quick lunch or a more interesting grab-and-go to the sandwich places in the N-St concourse. There's also a place that does VERY well filled Mexican wraps opposite Yo Sushi above the N-St concourse, if you've a big appetite.

Dinners - depends how much you want to spend, there's a lot of places offering a pricey service and so-so food (like Asha's - there seems to be so many Indians in Birmingham that some are just trying to up the service without upping the food quality. Although Dishoom I'm told is very good). If I'm eating out in B'ham it tends to be the fine-dining options (Adams, Purnells, Oyster Club all very good but £££) or a team event (e.g. Turtle Bay, Bar Estilo, Topokki, Rosa's Thai are all places I'd go back to for more casual fare).

I do want to try Fazenda next - ate in their new restaurant near Moorgate a couple of months back and was very impressed.

Thanks for the reply. I'll give those places a try for lunch!

Dinner budget is £30 on expenses (alloance hasn't gone up in 10 years!) but can go a bit higher if somewhere is really nice.

Ok, it's on the list for the next trip! I'll have a break from currys I think.

This man knows! Best beef burger in the city, we’ll worth a visit.

If you want a chicken burger I would recommend checking out bonehead which is a 5 minute walk from the station. You should grab a beer in cherry reds over the road first too.
