The Bastakiya part of town is quite nice to have a wander around and I'm told that the museum housed in the main fort is actually pretty good.

You can then get a river taxi for peanuts and go to the other side and have a mooch around the gold souk.

Might be a bit warm during the day and they place comes alive in the evenings.

If you fancy something that you couldn't do in the UK, take a taxi to the Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club (about 15 minutes outside of Dubai) and fire some handguns.
"Would sir like the .357 Magnum or the Glock now?"

there's also the jebel ali international shooting club. has just been refurbished and the ranges updated, owned by that sheikh who won gold at the olympics. few beers and a shotgun, has to be a good day out.

There is a decent wee go kart track outside the Jebel Ali Hotel. We used to sneak the work van, and whizz out of the port and go for a race! hehe

I hate to bring it back to being a tourist but I do quite fancy going to the main mosque. Do they do visits?

Yeah, once you've temporarily converted so you can get in - there's not much to it.

Open a shop opposite the Mosque called 'Alan's Snack Bar' (free advertising five times a day) and do a special deal on Friday mornings for bacon butties - do a two for one during Ramadan.

I'd forgotten about the Mosque, it is interesting to go there and learn more about the religon. I did the museum many years ago and its worth doing once. The historic gold souk, spice souk etc closes for lunch (which seems to start later and last longer than you might expect) but it is interesting to wander around, as long as you can accept every trader trying to pursuade your money in their shop.

Ah, the gold souk. Never before has a place been as yellow before in the history of planet earth! We used to be able to buy watches much cheaper than the UK, but I think prices have gone up now.

I'd give the desert safari a go if you have time. You sit in a Landcruiser which is driven by some crazy bloke who bombs around the sand dunes.
