sunbeam alpine - thanks for that
FUBAR - added that place to the list , looks lovely , and fantastic reviews
welshbeef - also added the brewery tour to the list as its only 7 euros , and i'll get to drink the missus free samples too! smile

booked a hotel in bruges tonight , for 3 nights , so probably drive to ghent for a day, and ypres on the way back.
just need to book a ferry now , either p&o or myferrylink as similar prices , then work the rest out as we go along.
thanks.

Haven't been for a few years but have been to both and prefer the fewer tourists and more student style of Ghent smile

Our family holiday this year involves driving to Bruge, and staying in a little house for a week next to a canal.

I'm surprised at the comments about prices, we stayed in December in a lovely hotel just of Market Platz, had a meal in a bar, with beer, bought lots of chocolate and nothing seemed terribly expensive.

Same,
Although we just did a day trip spent some time in bars/food etc seemed usual prices to me and parking in the centre was extraordinarily cheap!

OP - any reason particularly for ferry? Tunnel is cheaper and much quicker.

Was it any quicker though, allowing for having to be at the airport 2 centuries before the flight is due to take off?

We recently did a 'Top Gear Challenge' from Amsterdam, we drove and daughter took public transport - driving won door-to-door.

TBH not 100%, we pretty much landed, got on a train off a train waited 5 mins on another and was there, took about an extra 1.5 hours with trains but only 50 mins or so to get there on plane....

That's interesting as I've never found any way cheaper than the tunnel, I always go to the tunnel website directly and it's always £60 return for the times we want. Plus a fiver back from Quidco if you use them.

Maybe it's because of the time we are going, on a Sunday morning, probably more to travel on a weekend and not in the early hours of the morning too.?

Very likely - the pricing does seem to change depending on time/day of course - guess so far we have been lucky smile

We went to both at the end of February, three days in Bruges and a day trip to Gent, it's only about 45 minutes max between them.

Bruges is expensive, but not hideously so if you look around. Do some research and avoid anywhere in the usual tourist trap type areas and its fine.

Don't know what you are into, but everyone here has the chocolate and beer angle covered (we went to the brewery tour in Bruges, you don't see much of the current brewing, but it's quite good fun. At the end, use your 'free' beer token to get one of the four beers on tap, then order the other three and get them all, you'll be quite merry come the end!

We love Flemish Primitive art, so the Groeninge Museum and the Memling Museum in Bruges was great, but the Gent altarpiece was awesome, worth going to see even if you aren't into art. The Fine Art museum in Gent was very good also, if you like that kind of thing.

Parking in Bruges at hotels can be expensive, you'll read lots of people say park at the station as its a nightmare to drive around. Not so, it's pretty easy really, find the nearest car park to your hotel and park there. We parked at t'Zand, excellent secure car park and 8 euros a day.

Bruges for the chocolate box appeal, Gent is more of a proper town.

Have you check DFDS on the Dover - Dunkirk route? That cuts out some of the driving.

True, but Calais - Bruges can be done in just over an hour ( not to I would do such a thing :coughsmile and no more tan 1.5 hors if you just pootle along taking in the scenery.

Personally I would (and do) pay the extra £20 each way for the train to stop farting about waiting for the ferry and then sitting on it for 1.5 hours **

  • I'm sure, as a kid in the 70s/early 80s, the Dover Calais ferry crossing used to take an hour??

I agree, I always choose the tunnel for the crossing, but it is more expensive.

In the old days, you could always choose the Seacat or the hovercraft for the crossing, would get you sub one hour IIRC.
