But we were originally planning to go in July for our honeymoon, and we couldn't afford any hotels. Anything 4* or more was over £5000, (some £10000), just for the two of us.

We ended up going end of September and spending just £1900 on flights, car hire and hotel, which was perfect.

Most days were spent buzzing about in the fiat 500 along the coast, stopping for gelato, and seeing Pompeii on one occaision.
Then we would come back, have a swim in the pool or the sea and go back out for dinner.

It was plenty hit enough, but much quieter than how it can be in peak season, and am glad we didn't go in July in the end.

Which is why we chose to go to Garda 1st week of October this year.
Holiday cost about the same, but the hotel looks better equipped and of a higher rating.
But will be having to fiat 500 again to buzz around the lake side and visit the nearby cities like Venice, Milan and Verona

I like Garda late season, though the weather is starting to break up by then. The Lakes weather is quite mixed and September onwards the sunny days become fewer and the rainy ones more plentiful.

Not sure how well you know the area, but I have usually found that Riva is one of the quieter towns. Less crowded in feel anyway. Limone anticlockwise from you is one of the busiest and in my opinion too touristy, though by October the fat Americans won't be blocking the narrow streets.

I like Malcesine (Clockwise from you) a lot and it has some nice places to eat. The best pizza I have ever had was sold by the slice out a hole in the wall down a side street in Malcesine.

Never been to Garda so its all new to me.

We are staying in Riva, so hopefully that's a good choice for a base.

We aren't sunbathers, so changeable weather should be alright. I've heard it can be more muggy (similar to uk) near the lakes compared to the coastal towns.

Now I think of it, I have been to Garda three times. The first time was half sunny, then extremely humid and then super stormy.

Second time was sunny for 3 days, then very rainy for 3 and heartbreakingly it cheered up a few hours before we came home.

Last time the weather was pretty good.

That's the weather in the Lakes though and you've got to put up with the uncertainty if you want the beautiful scenery. It's verdant despite being sunny which is, obviously, because it rains sometimes.

I never mentioned that we were staying at the Miramare Hotel in garda ,it had very good reviews on that site which we all look at prior to booing!,can't wait.

I visited Salo on Lake Garda a couple of times around ten years ago, then it was a lovely town and I'd highly recommend it as worth a look at least. Had one of the best (value ad quality) meals I've ever had at a small restaurant set back from the main street, the place and service were impeccable - http://www.osteriadimezzo.it/

I'm writing this from a sunny Desenzano at the southern end of Garda. Only arrived yesterday evening, after a couple of days driving, so today is a sunbed and cold drinks day! Route down took in the burgundy region and then Turin to get a snap of the car at Lingotto (pic to follow!) and we're heading back next week through Switzerland/Stelvio and the Alsace. Too early to offer much opinion on the town but seems fine so far. It was a PHer who recommended this town and this hotel.

West side of Garda over the East, much nicer IMO,

We stayed in Gargnano in Hotel Gardenia Al Lago and it was brilliant. Lovely hotel in the village, great family service, excellent food and wine and a nice garden by the lake. Also entyvof nice restaurants in the village around 5 - 10mins walk away.

Also go for the local wine, it cost about £11 a bottle in the hotel and some of the best bottles in restaurants were only £20. We generally had 3-4 over the course of the day.

Take your hire car up the moutain just above gargnano for some awesome joining roads and have a drink enjoying the great view. Then don't forget to enjoy the partially tunnels north of gargnano, as these are where the car chase at the beginning of 'Quantum of Solace' were filmed

Its also worth spending a day in malcesine then travelling up the cable car to the top. Its pretty chilly even in high summer, bit having the clouds come up from below and over you is wonderful, as is the view.

Lovely area, great for a couples escape.

Stresa was a good place to stay and good trips out from there. Como was very busy and hard to park.

Thats the place, Stresa was a great town to base the visit from, we were living down in a little town on the Ligurian coast at the time, so it was only a few hours drive to get there.

Stresa is nice. However I preferred Como myself. I also enjoyed taking a boat out on Como more - personally, I thought it was more picturesque (sp?!)
