Great advice, thanks to all, especially XJS and AJS, think I'll take a step back.
outside of BKK, no worries, just apply the usual common sense, some practice time in a quiet car park and remember that people generally don't hoon about on the scoots like kids in the UK do!!smart move to back down on riding in Bangers though

Glad you've seen sense. XJS et al are bang on.
I ride big bikes and have hired loads of bikes on the islands but wouldn't do it in Bangers. Way too dangerous. (17 killed each day - predominantly in BKK - I believe).
Be careful. The island roads can be very trick and steep. They aren't the best place to learn to ride.
And the shout about travel insurance was a good one. The vast majority of policies exclude it. Egg used to - but only if you had a UK licence to do so.

Should watch out for sand on the road if you end up on islands, one false move on that and its all over.
Thinking about it Chiang Mai was the first time I had ever rode a scooter on the roads. Pulling up to traffic lights with 40+ scooters all around was an experience... Stood me in good stead for future riding though!

Best ways to get around BKK:
1. http://www.bts.co.th/customer/en/02-route-current....
2. http://www.chaophrayaexpressboat.com/en/services/
Cool, cheap, no traffic jams.

Another vote for DON'T HIRE A f
kING SCOOTER IN BANGKOK camp. The traffic there is facking crazy.
Dead easy to get around, the subway is ace and cabs are cheap.
Nice to get something on the islands though, we got a 400cc harley knock off something-or-other to travel round koh samui and the only pre-requisite was that you could scrawl something on a waiver, and pay them. It mattered not a f
k if you could ride a bike or not ![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)
One stand out memory was riding along, my Mrs on the back and some dude on a bike pulls up along side and opens his jacket, del-boy style..."you wan buy cocaine??"".....and he presented a coat based shop front of off licence pharmaceuticals. I politely declined![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)
Brilliant place.

Have you tried the BTS at rush hour? Only good thing about it is the smudging opportunities available.1. http://www.bts.co.th/customer/en/02-route-current....

The boat is probably the most inconvenient unless you don't mind riding the Khlong boats which will drop you somewhere near wherever you want to be.
I rode in Bangkok for a good six months before getting bored of that game, and used nothing more than an International driving license purchased from Somchai down Khao San Rd
You should also come to our weekly PH "Dirty Dicks" night when you arrive.
