You’re aware the revolver isn’t a modern weapon?
No, I thought the Internet invented it !

Why not a Webley or Colt, eg period to the remains of those fallen ?
Not sure it’s meant to be a specific model, is it?
Just what are you two on about?
The OP wants advice on visiting the site of the most important military invasion in human history.
Not reading insignificant posts from you guys.

Well, given the place it is, yes it is actually.

I agree very minor point but noticeable.

This is a pretty long list of some places to visit in Normandy - maybe as you are on the way to a key visit:

Last time I was there at Easter & the weather was beautiful - in one of the bunkers a pair of swallows were building a nest.

For the return part of the journey you could consider Cabourg, Trouville and Deauville - whilst it's not the Chateaux you were after, it's a very nice trio of seafront towns to visit.

Cabourg stands out due to the street layout - it's very distinctive and the planes / gliders used it as a waypoint on their way to the landings. Worth a stop as part of the overall history of the landings.

Trouville / Deauville are essentially conjoined seaside towns. There are lots of very nice hotels and lots of very nice restaurants. We ate in one called "L'essential" and it was excellent. You could then get a day crossing from Caen, book a cabin, and catch up on your missing sleep on the boat.

I do wish whoever owns PH would spend some money to allow photos to be hosted the right way round!

We stayed in Bayeux but chose not to do the museum there as we’d already visited two others. As a break from war, we took one day off and went to Mont St Michel and St Malo instead

Pegasus bridge is well worth a visit.
The museum is good and plenty to see and do in the area.

Honfleur is a great little harbour town, very picturesque and as you say, some great dining. Thing is it’s at the extreme Eastern edge of the Overlord region so some of the areas of interest up towards Carentan and St Mere Eglise will be well over an hour away.

Honfleur is lovely, and an hour or so in the car from there is no real hardship.

That photo certainly gives sombre food for thought (enfilade fire etc).

Useful thread as I aim to explore this area in detail in the next two years having exhausted the WW1 battlefields. Thanks OP.

No, no hardship, just an unnecessary two hours on the Peage there and back as opposed to finding somewhere more in the heart of the drop zones.
Somewhere around Bayeaux would be better.

We stuck to the coast roads - takes longer but preferable to the Peage smile

I have to agree - Honfleur is an overrated pile of tourist bait. Go once, enjoy the picturesque harbour and little alleys with funky shops. All are very expensive as are the restaurants around the harbour with quality rarely matching the cost (restaurants away from the harbour are better but just not the same ambience especially if outside in the Summer). Don't get me wrong, it is a lovely place to go but for the D-Day experiences you're better-off West of Caen
