Coranavirus Travelling to Thailand
Discussion
There are now 19 cases in Thailand, one of which is an example of person-to-person transmission within Thailand. I was expecting this to escalate much faster so I wonder how much information is being suppressed. The most significant side-effect at the moment is that everything is 3% cheaper!
I’d say a lot depends on resort/hotel. We are in second week of a Malaysia trip. First week in Penang was great until last two days when most hotel staff started wearing face masks and set up mandatory temperature monitoring station in reception. This was a Shangri-La resort. Second week in Langkawi- once through airport and into hotel (which is quite remote) we haven’t seen a face mask.
If you’re not ok with holidaying in what feels like a hospital then check it out first.

I’ve been in Thailand for a week (Koh Samui) having been to Singapore for 3 days before that. Not many folk are wearing masks here and life is continuing pretty normally. Many more people with masks in Singapore though it was Chinese New Year so there were loads of Chinese visitors.
I wouldn’t let the current situation stop you from travelling to Thailand.

Back in Thailand. Hasn't affected Bangkok except for a handful of paranoids wearing masks in the KSR. Airport is all masks. Chinese have their own passport lane, presumably to monitor them and so we don't share fingerprint machines.
We were corralled past an infra red camera.
Some Taxi drivers are masked, as are lots of servers in restaurants.
Up in Kanchanerbury now and you'd barely know there was anything amiss. Will surely be the same on the beaches.
Certainly should not stop you holidaying from what we've seen.

My Father in law decided to pull out of our holiday next week due to the BBC and Sky news coverage he had seen. After watching a few vids on Youtube of deserted streets in Chinatown,Bangkok and a very quiet Bangla Rd,he changed his mind.
That said Mrs S has bought gallons of Anti-bac and wipes.

It really is fine, and all the mass tourist hot spots are lovely and quiet. On the bus back from Erawan Falls as I type, and we had whole pools to ourselves, once we got up ahead of the Russians :-)
The huge aweful buffet restaurants that are everywhere in Thailand hotspots are empty.
My mum _& sister are besides themselves with worry for us, all down to UK TV news. Once I showed them pics of normality they relaxed. A bit.

It’s less then a week now before we fly out.We have loaded up on anti-bac and wipes but looking at recent videos posted on Youtube and Facebook Thailand is deserted.
100ml hand sanitizer is a great bet . That's the real main risk. Touching a handle that someone infected has. Again to clarify , only been doing this on public transport.Loads , and I mean loads , of cafes and restaurants and bars in Thailand have a bottle on the counter for general use now. Including little grubby places.
It doesn't feel like "the plague" (apart from at the airports ), more like everyone has just stepped up their personal hygiene all of a sudden.
The masks are not vital, but are good for:
1) If YOU have a cold / cough - it makes everyone else far more relaxed!
2) If someone near you on plane/train/bus is coughing and sneezing without covering their mouth - which sadly, is very common in SE Asia, and the Middle East (all the people on the plane from Doha / Muscat to BKK!). The TV quacks keep saying they don't stop viruses, but at the same time, they also keep saying they suspect Corona is spread by droplets (spit/mucus) - which masks DO stop.....
3) When transiting at airports you really don't want to touch things, like hand rails, door handles, grab handles etc and then touch yoru mouth, nose or eyes. Wearing the mask stops you doing the first two, and then that's enough to jolt you into not doing the third. Otherwise, it's very easy to forget.
The masks are in 7-11 as said. They cost bugger all too.
