My sister-in-law is married to a Jersey farmer so I have been going to Jersey regularly for more than 30 years. First visit was for her wedding when our first daughter was 3 months old. last visit was with 27 and 30 year old daughters for my sister-in-law's '30 years married' celebrations.

Our kids always enjoyed the beaches and when older the pubs and bars.

Many shops make a thing of no VAT, but prices are full retail prices with few discounts so prices pretty much the same as, or more than, in the UK. Beer, wine and spirits were cheaper in the past but pretty much the same now. Petrol is also much closer to UK price than it was in the past.

Air fares and ferry prices very expensive compared with travelling to mainland Europe. Ferry for car + 2 people was £420 last time I used it although I see there are currently offers at around £280.

The Underground Hospital was renamed The War Tunnels a while ago so you won't see any signs referring to the Underground Hospital. A recommended visit - particularly on a very hot day as it is cool in the tunnels.

Has St Helier still got the really naff "park" with the cartoon lion (as I recall) mascot?

I was there as a kid, so my memory is hazy (Los Angeles Olympics - 84?)

lived there for the past 4 years, its quite a nice place, can be a bit tedious being 20yrs old with not much to do compared to UK. same pubs/clubs over and over again,

however, for tourists its very popular, with lots of things to see and do. Deffinitally check out the Zoo and the Nazi Underground Hospital. Living legend (electric go-karts, general small theme park) would probably be your best bet for the kids. Very nice beaches, St Brelades, St Aubins, hire out a jet-ski and blast around the bay.
Good pubs all over the island! Plenty of shops for the missus, but compared to UK they do have a poor selection, and aren't as cheap as everyone is lead to beleive, with GST (type of VAT) being introduced a while ago.

Accomadation, Pontac House Hotel in St Clements is alright if your looking for somewhere out of town, Pomme d'or is smack bang in town, close to the main bus station, (which if your not hiring a car is the best way to travel around the island) then theres the new Royal Yacht Hotel, also right in town. (expensive) there is also the Radisson Hotel on the waterfront.

Wouldnt advise staying for longer than a week, as you'd probably get bored quite quickly! HTH

Been a couple of times and always enjoyed it.

Stayed here when we went two years ago. http://www.dolanhotels.com/The-Golden-Sands/

Going again for August bank holiday for the motoring event and will be staying here http://www.princeofwales.je/

Definitely need a hire car, but it doesn't take long to get anywhere.

We stayed at the other Seymour Hotel, the Merton in St Helier. Very child-friendly, buffet meals, evening entertainment (similar to Spanish hotels) plus fantastic covered swimming pool complex with slides etc.

Enjoyed the laid-back feel of the island. Just big enough for 1wk relaxed exploring.

Took the car over via Weymouth catamaran. I subsequently found out that this is known as "the vomit comet" (my son was sick).

Kids your age the beach I'd recommend would be Greve de Lecq. If wind in wrong direction then St Brelades.

Dont think much of the place - spent a week in St Helier in June 2008. Very over crowded & over built. Tiny roads with a speed limit of (I think) 30 MPH. Once while driving I was sworn at and told to go back to F***King England by a nice local (supposedly I drove to near his cycle). Beaches are great providing the weather is OK. Not as cheap as I expected.. Zoo was great as was the German Underground emplacements. Not worth a return trip.

SWMBO and I had a good holiday there Mertons was OK - we were the youngest people there. Found a couple of good restaurants an easy walk away. Managed to get around on the buses - didn't hire a car - Sunday bus service was a bit dire, though

Living Legend is the most excruciatingly bad experience I've ever had - avoid like the Devil

I had some work in Jersey last year - stayed at Mertons... it's full of coffin dodgers.... plus the swimming complaex was closed (off-season)

But it's nice walk into St Helier through the park.

If you really want somewhere nice to go - go to Guernsey and stay at the Piette Hotel or the Duke of Normandy.
