Be careful round the red light district, and I mean keep your eyes open and be alert, it's not a good place to be mashed.
But if you do happen to be wandering around it wkered, take in the patter of the doormen outside the Casa Rosa. They're great value.

'Gentlemen, come on inside for some utter filth and depravity, the like of which you have never seen; but in a clean enwironment'

I was very nearly in the canal laughing.

It's great when there are plenty of you and you're not too mashed. I'm just remembering the time a Yank tourist went missing up an alley and then after two boxes of mushrooms being approached by someone who said he was let out of jail that day and needed money. My mate took his wallet out and gave him some money only to be surrounded by a large group of darker skinned gentleman all pointing to us. We thought it best to run at that point because there is not much else we could have done. The memories of a guy playing a swan like a set of bagpipes at Vondelpark made up for it though.

My parents live not far from Amsterdam and although not a big smoker, I have been round a few coffeeshops in Amsterdam...

This website will give you some good ideas...

http://www.coffeeshop.freeuk.com/Map.html

...and I can 100% recommend the Abraxas coffeeshop (around D/E 5 on the map). http://www.coffeeshop.freeuk.com/AbraxasCS.html. Over new year a hilarious evening was had which kicked off after splif and cake from there. biggrin The walk to Leidseplein from there was much more amusing than normal anyway.

Ok, The Dam was great, and to reply to an earlier comment... The smoking ban does not really seem to matter or have much impact to be honest. nearly every cafe we went into seemed to let us use tobacco. There was one cafe we went to that was 'puree' only but that was it!!!

Route 66 was possibly the nicest place I went to, and I couldn't find Barneys for love nor money...

Thanks for the replies guys...

I always like getting a wee bag of Mexican Mushrooms. A few cheeky nibbles together with a few beers in the less touristy bars, always makes for a decent alternative to the coffee-shops. smile

There's a couple of good shops around the centre and round by flower-market.

We cannot stay in cafe's all day... Can we?
one does tend to lose one's get-up-and-go somewhat
