Other steakhouses
The Palm - 837 second av between 44 & 45th streets
Del Frisco's 1221 6th av at 49th st
Peter Luger's should come in at about $100 per head if you don't go mad on the wine list.

Italian
Babbo - 110 Waverly Place, between MacDougal & 6th St)- NY most popular Italian, read mega expensive. Eat early and eat at the bar to avoid waiting a long time
Becco - 355 West 46th St - meant o be lots of fun and good food as well

Chinese
Oriental Garden - 14 Elizabrth St, between canala and Bayard, good seafood but brusque service and a boring interior
Tse Yang - 34 East 51st St between Park and Madison - delicious but very very pricey
Shun Lee Palace -155 East 55th St between lexington and 3rd Av - less expensive than tse yang but food in the same quality

its got to be Roberts steak house surely?

Amazing steak restaurant that just happens to be located in the Penthouse 'executive' club...

I won't link to their website because I am at work and I am not sure what is on there! But it really is very good.

the New York Times article is here - very very strict workplaces could view a picture on the article as NSFW i suppose

Second vote for 'Patsy's' and they now have another in Atlantic City. Huge veal chops are superb.
If you are on that side of town also try 'Cognacs', as the name implies lots of Cognac tastings and the Maine Lobster Flambe is superb.

Gallaghers is excellent but The Striphouse www.striphouse.com is even better. Amazing steaks and the Crisp Goose Fat Potatoes and Black Truffle Creamed Spinach are to die for.

Has anyone tried http://www.leshalles.net/ - which is where Anthony Bourdain is "Chef at Large".

I quite fancied the look of it after reading his books, but haven't had the chance yet.

The spotted pig - more of a gastro pub (with a Michelin star) then an actual restaurant - but it's a great place to go.
