ok gated was probably a bad choice of words (not even an inch is given on here is it) i was thinking more along the lines of London where you get the nice, well, gates leading into the district and its clean and nice etc.. Interesting hearing the other opinions though, maybe i should have given it a bit more of a chance, the boys have been there and absolutely loved it, maybe it was so built up by them i was always going to be dissapointed. Plus i was with the missus so may have been a bit more en guard...

Darn i also meant taxi to manhatten. My bad, but not wearing trainers i wanted to get a taxi to the end of the block such was the size of my blisters.

PH - the pursuit of the perfectly constructed narrative continues...

We went to New York on our honeymoon a few weeks ago. I've never felt more safe. China town was quite cool, we ate some weird stuff though. They didn't speak a word of English, so our ordering went something like this:

Pointing at the same dish: "Chicken?" nod. "Pork?" nod. "Beef?" nod. Still wasn't sure even after eating it.

Agree that it seems to be eating Little Italy. Didn't think of it as dirty either. I suspect it all depends on your expectations, and being on our honeymoon, everything kind of felt special!

"I rented a car and drove to Washington."

From NY?, flaming heck, that must have taken another two days in itself.

huh?

It took around 4 hours each way!

Set off early in the morning, checked out all the sights you would expect and drove back, got back around midnight though.

Chinatown NY is crazy, I love it. I honestly felt more alien than I did in Shanghai. The London one is just a bunch of poor quality restaurants serving sweet slop - the new york one is pretty much like being in China, with street snacks, a few crazy musicians, traders, everything.

You must mean Washington DC (District of Columbia). Washington is actually on the other side of the country, 2,700+ miles from NY. Not even a PHer could drive that distance in 4 hours!!.

I'm feeling like i missed out now rolleyes to be fair most reviews are coming back good for the place. The only place we found to eat was Dunkin Donuts (how ironic) and that had a crazy old black man in it asking for a bite of everyones food. Maybe i just had a bad experience on the day. I must admit i felt more safe in New York generally than i ever have in London though..

Chinatown is great to walk around and has great food, also convenient to combine with little Italy.

And the last time I went Chinatown was in Manhattan, you would have confused the taxi driver if you had asked to go there - take a look at a map.

And Londons Chinatown is rubbish.

Chinatown isnt in Manhatten. Its below Soho. Manhatten is north of Soho. 5 mins in a taxi.

I thought Manhattan was a district covering Chelsea and Grenwich Village, thats how it was explained to me. Manhattan is the whole island? Wikipedia says

"Manhattan is one of the five boroughs of New York City, located primarily on Manhattan Island at the mouth of the Hudson River.

New York County, which has the same boundaries as the Borough of Manhattan (and which should not be confused with New York City), is the most densely populated county in the United States" blah blah blah.

The bit in brackets is the important bit in this sentance me thinks.

So no, manhatten isnt the whole island wink

Yes, I imagine going from South Yorkshire to New York must be a little underwhelming.
If it ain't in yorkshire, it's not worth visiting!

yes, it is - its a borough of new york surrounded by Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island. Places like Chinatown, Soho, TriBeCa are just neighbourhoods....in Manhattan. Trust me on this smile

Manhattan is the blue bit, within which are many neighbourhoods. The other boroughs are surroudning it in red, yellow etc. They are HUGE compared to neighbourhoods.

The biggest memory I have of Chinatown was all the dead animals hanging from the shop and restaurant windows.
Not so much the fact that dead animals were hanging in full view waiting to become food, but the fact that I couldn't identify what the animals were....
