I too was going to suggest the Isle of Wight. I really like the place and despite being quite small, there is a wealth of things to keep you occupied.

We went last summer and stayed in Sandown, which was quite nice. There are absolutely loads of B&B's and holiday parks around. I don't particularly like them, but caravans may be quite nice for your kids. I remember staying in one as a child was a bit of a novelty.

In terms of things to do, both Sandown and Ryde have nice beaches and the sea at both is pretty calm. There is also Blackgang Chine which is great for kids, a couple of other amusement parks, the Needles, Dancing Waters show etc.
