Do steps still get recorded correctly when using poles?
My Strava & iPhone are always very similar readings so I guess they must.

Using hiking poles in the UK is rare. It’s odd. Go to other countries and they’re normal hiking equipment that most people use. They massively help people of all ages and skill levels to have an easier time hiking, especially on steep terrain. They also help hugely if you have a heavier pack. Obviously poles aren’t a magic fix that suddenly lets someone hike routes they normally could not hike.

In summary… use poles.
I live / hike in Norway

Hiking uphill with more than 10kg I’ll use poles, Winter on walking on ice or over frozen lakes I’ll have them out.

Straps are essential I feel, over a long distance you’ll appreciate there’s less need to grip the pole, you can lean into the strap.

Changing the tips from rubber (summer) to carbide (winter) and foldable are pretty essential too .. I’ve had three years with Black Diamond Distance FLZ which will fit inside a backpack when folded … My Osprey bags have straps / loops you can stow away on the move also

Yeah the straps are essential. Many people don’t use them in the recommended way and don’t get the benefits.

I use folding Black Diamond and Leki poles which work really well. I am tempted by the super light Leki race poles for reducing weight on Alps Hut hikes!

Saw this report on the local news and thought it might be interesting for others to see:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-derbyshir...

Was up in the Peaks as usual last weekend (10 mile circuit around Stanedge Edge and Redmires Reservoir). Very warm for the time of year, but the autumnal colours are starting to creep in...

Has anybody bought any gear from a company called RevolutionRace?
They sell lots of good looking outdoor gear, but it's all by brands I've never heard of, nor seen anywhere else.
Just wondered if it's as good as it looks?

Revolution Race have been discussed on this thread a few months back....

Personally, I'm not a massive fan (bought a pair of their trousers). The quality is good, but the 'fit' is not fit for purpose IMO. The trousers are a very skinny cut and the hems are stupidly narrow. Seriously, you'll struggle to get your feet through them, let alone get them over your boots. Also, the leg pockets are quite small and are situated so they are not much use in the real world (the cargo pockets sit on the front of the legs rather than being offset to the side, so anything you put in them digs into your thighs and feels very uncomfortable).

Not tried the jackets. I don't believe in throwing good money after bad.

I was watching a video about them on YouTube a while back, and RR were described as outdoor gear for people who want to look the part of an outdoorsy person but don't necessarily spend much time outside of cities.

Have to agree with this.

Yes- have a ski jacket which is decent quality.
I know what Faust66 is saying but they do lots of different trousers now- just need to look for relaxed fit.

They keep popping up as adverts on my Instagram and the above seems to sum them up, lots of skinny, athletic types pictured, not the usual fat, middle aged hiker that you actually see out and about.

I don't think I could carry off their multi-coloured trousers as a look anyway.

My opinion of RR was destroyed when they starting very heavily advertising on Instagram and giving away clothing to anyone with a few thousands followers. They were far more blatant with it than any other outdoor brand. They were absolutely everywhere on the outdoor Instagram scene. I think they've calmed down a little now but it made me want to never use them.

I have an RR coat I did Ben Nevis in a few months ago and was great. I did order trousers but sizing was laughable so sent them back and refund was handled quickly

After getting my foot right after an injury last month I am looking for new walking shoes. Will probably get Merrells again but with almost all shoes the tread doesn't last long, especially on tarmac. Always try and pick ones with less pronounced tread but still won't last long. The shoes themselves are still immaculate but the tread is gone.

Never knew that was a thing on modern shoes. I'll look into that

Hmmmm, going to check this firm out (they are not that far from me).

I really struggle to get boots re-soled as most places don't or won't repair boots in my size (15). Even Lowa - the boot manufacturer - can't help. It's bloody annoying as I've got many pairs of 200 quid a time boots with perfect uppers that I can't get resoled.

Altberg will also resole their boots if anyone has a pair.

I use trail runners and burn through them fast. I get 500-600km from a pair before retiring them to non-hiking use. I go through approximately 3 pairs a year! They are ~£150 a pair. Hiking isn’t cheap!

Lancashire Sports Repair I think they’re called, worth a look from what I’ve heard.

Having spent £400 in the last two months, I have to agree!
