Who’s going skiing and where 2019
Discussion
Can't go at Feb half term this year so hoping to tempt the missus for a family trip on 30th March or 6th April for a week. 2 adults , 1 child (8yrs with 2 weeks of ski school experience). I'm happy across the mountain but the missus is an unconfident intermediate. Adults will be snowboarding and daughter on skis. Any recommendations for that late in the season - I've seen some good deals for Sestriere but possibly too late in the season for good snow.
Needs to be reasonably snow sure but not break the bank. We'll probably not book until late Feb / early March so hopefully will get a good idea on the snow levels before booking.

Well, after suggesting Soll to someone a week ago as a good place to go I’ve just booked to go there with Mrs R later this month. Whoop whoop.
I went to Soll last January and really enjoyed it. A good access point to other parts of Skiwelt too.my top tip for soll is to get the latest lift you can to the top of 'hohe salve' (the top of soll resort), stop off at the bar/ restaurant at the top for a beer. sit there until they close up/ throw you out....... then ski off the top of the hill, but skirt round and get onto the runs below 'lift number 42', cant remember which name/ number the runs are. but these runs are the first ones to get the piste bashers on them for the next day/ night skiing. which means you get perfect corduroy to blast down at break neck speeds whilst absolutely empty! absolutely perfect end to a day skiing.
although I have heard that the salvenstadl is now closed down at the roundabout in town. finishing a day skiing with a beer outside while eating a BBQ'd burger was just the best!

I've been to soll about 3 or 4 times now, really fun resort. you can really travel about the different villages, then have a very entertaining race back to make the last lift to the top of soll so you dont have to use the bus!

I went to the salvenstadl a few times - very convenient on the way back to where I was staying. There are quite a few good places to go out in soll - jam jar and whisky mule are both worth a visit.my top tip for soll is to get the latest lift you can to the top of 'hohe salve' (the top of soll resort), stop off at the bar/ restaurant at the top for a beer. sit there until they close up/ throw you out....... then ski off the top of the hill, but skirt round and get onto the runs below 'lift number 42', cant remember which name/ number the runs are. but these runs are the first ones to get the piste bashers on them for the next day/ night skiing. which means you get perfect corduroy to blast down at break neck speeds whilst absolutely empty! absolutely perfect end to a day skiing.

The gondola to the top of the hohe salve saves a lot of time as you can do quite a few runs back to back from there if you want to ski all the way down to village level. The red (#30) back the the gondola in the village is good fun at the end of the day and there is a nice bar right next to the end of it too
This was the view from where I was staying last year - the mountain in the background is the where the gondola starts.
Just put together the last stages of my trip to Colorado. Whilst in the pub on Christmas Eve, managed to sign up an old mate so that will be rather jolly now that it's not just me on my tod. Probs a bit more headachey. C'est la vie.
Anyway, think we'll do a few days in Breck, and then whizz up in the car (a Brokeback Mountain Jeep Wrangler[1]) to Vail on a daily basis. The shuttle bus service from Frisco looks *extremely* handy for the occasional gin on the slopes nearer by, obvs facilitates a number of lagerbeers in the tooon after falling off the hill.
[1] Guaranteed model, according to Sixt. I'm a sucker for Jeeps[2].
[2] If not I want to go full yank and Suburban/Yukon it up.

In the news so much of Austria is snowed in.
One resort wouldn’t hold the ladies tournament so L Vonn and others didn’t go. Hope that doesn’t spoil anyone’s skiing.
As an aside - how are the U.K. ski resorts doing? Is it really worth a quick drive up there for a l2 day ski weekend trip (From Reading)

Bugger all in the UK at the moment, everything that fell before Christmas has melted and it's been too warm to snow for the last few weeks. January is often hit and miss anyway, here's hoping they get something for later in the season.Worth keeping an eye on http://www.winterhighland.com/ for conditions and status of the UK resorts.
