I'm doing it slightly differently. Myself and a mate are keeping certain dates open, and in the week beforehand we'll book somewhere based on quarantines and cases at the time. We both figure this is the best way to avoid disruption and hopefully some great deals will be offered to try and entice a little bit of tourism to areas.
Despite the whole pandemic thing, I'm looking forward to getting out to somewhere this winter. Slopes should be lovely and clear!
I think that is a very good approach if you don't have to travel in school holidays. Despite the whole pandemic thing, I'm looking forward to getting out to somewhere this winter. Slopes should be lovely and clear!
I think the slopes even in peak season will be quiet - the problem will be the lift queues getting up there which could be annoying. The large capacity chairlifts which are usually brilliant at whisking people up the mountain are going to be running at a fraction of their normal capacity (depending upon the exact rules they apply in each resort).
We've booked flights to Munich 26th November and a hire car to get us to Obergurgl for 2 weeks. I'm still fingers crossed we'll get there even if we need to get a private test before we travel. Especially as the snow looks fantastic already. I'm not worried about lift queues either as you hardly queue even at peak times.

I think we're going to look at going over New Year. Only time my clients don't pester me (usually). Might drive down to the French Alps (in Kent), to give us a bit more flexibility with things too.I think the slopes even in peak season will be quiet - the problem will be the lift queues getting up there which could be annoying. I think you'll be right about the lifts. Though I think outside of term time the slopes might be busier than you think. Plenty of belligerent people around like me not wanting a little pandemic to spoil their fun!

New Year is traditionally the busiest time of the whole season is it not?I think you'll be right about the lifts. Though I think outside of term time the slopes might be busier than you think. Plenty of belligerent people around like me not wanting a little pandemic to spoil their fun!
I expect so. But it'll still be quieter relative to New Years in previous years. I'm not expecting the slopes to be empty, but I doubt they'll be packed either.
To be honest, Canada last New Years wasn't too bad until a couple of days after NY when all the school trips descended on the place.

In New Year in France it all depends upon the conditions. If the conditions are poor, many French people will gravitate toward the main (high) resorts making them busy. Whereas if conditions are good, they all get spread around.
So it is hard to say. I've gone ahead and booked going out with the family on 13th Dec and back on the 3rd Jan, but I honestly can't see it happening now

I'm not worried about Covid, as I caught it in the Mooserwirt anyway.
I'm sure you could catch worse things in there I'm consigning myself to defeat with my trips this winter.
We have two trips booked but not prepared to go in to quarantine for 2 weeks on return. Even if there are changes, I expect we'll need to get a negative test 72 before we travel. Realistically, I wouldn't want to confirm/pay for bookings until I am within that 72 hour period and we have received negative tests .... always a possibility we're positive and we can't travel.
Also, have noticed the flight options have become limited (understandably) meaning a night in Zurich to fly home from St Anton or fly to Salzburg and have a longer train journey. More concerned that unless the quarantine is lifted to these places, pretty sure the airlines will just can the flights all together!

Hmmm, it's true Obergurgl is quiet, but if like some US resorts only 2 people are allowed on every quad lift (unless family) some of the lifts might take a while to pass through. Not many quads in Obergurgl though IIRC.JQ said:
What about flying to Munich? I'd imagine there's more certainty over the Lufthansa flights as they're more aimed at business people.
Thats true and certainly a possibility if restrictions are lifted. Realistically, its a drive from Munich rather than the train ... not a major issue as I have done it before where as Salzburg is a 3hr train ride direct to St Anton, so is actually pretty easy. JEA1K said:

Depends on how many there of you there are, but we fly to Munich every year and get a pre-booked taxi to resort (Mayrhofen, Kitzbuhel, Saalbach, etc). Normally around £60 per person return.
St Anton is 300k/3 + hrs, so for 2 people a taxi would be extortionate and certainly more than car hire. Our usual route, or what has been for the past 20 years is Zurich as its 2 hours 20 on the train, again direct once you get the train into town.
Anyway, not in a position to make a decision until is quarantine lifted ... I expect if any countries join the safe list, they'll be inundated with bookings. First trip is supposed to ne 9th Jan ... second one mid March which could be more realistic for changes but lets see. For now, I'll just torture myself looking at the webcams ..
Surprised to see that resorts in France are expecting 70% of normal bookings, would have thought without UK and German bookings 70% would be very optimistic.
Apres ski will be pretty much dead, without the foreign visitors and with the restrictions. Many bars will not even open I expect.

Totally agree, even if they can travel, some will chose not to. Apres ski will be pretty much dead, without the foreign visitors and with the restrictions. Many bars will not even open I expect.
I had a look at Alberger Bergbahen website who run the lift systems in St Anton have info on what is planned his winter. No live/loud music, only background music will effectively mean no apres but apart from that, no planned restriction of numbers on lifts.

Yes an easy 3 hour drive from Munich to Obergurgl. Just hoping the North West is off the naughty boys step by the end of November.Carbon Sasquatch said:
