Good News; Rumoured to be Snowing in 3Vs this morning so I assume Paradiski and Espace Killy will also be getting some but that's not yet confirmed!
yep, quick check of the courchevel webcams show the altiport runway in all white again! so probably a 5cm minimum?!?!Edited by malks222 on Monday 19th December 08:51
Just back from a long weekend in Obertauern with the family and inlaws. Once again hard to beat for early season conditions. Only one chairlift not in operation and almost all pistes open, all with good coverage.
Most lifts had no queues, I think the longest we waited for a lift was about a minute.
According to ISKI tracker my 8yo son and I used 21 lifts, covered 40km of slopes and were active for 4 and half hours in a 7 hour day on Saturday. To quote him after a particularly exhilarating and fast red slope 'that was marvellous'.

Just back from my frist week of the season and although there wasn't much open in the Portes du Soliel what was open up in Avoriaz was in amazing shape all things considered.
Only downer was nearly ripping the edge off of one of my skis on the first day - 3" by 1/4" strip of the base taken out down to the core next to the edge and the edge buckled out slightly. Ski techs managed to do a reasonable patch job that lasted the week, but their general opinion was "It's only a matter of time". Worst thing was I didn't hear or feel any real rock/ice contacts, certainly not on the scale I'd expect would have been necessary to do that much damage.

Got the all clear from my doctor to head off on holiday in early Jan, so want to get something booked up. It's between Mösern/Seefeld and Zell am See. I prefer the hotel and shorter transfer at Mösern, but for I believe the snowboarding/snow could be better at Zell am See?
However, looking at reports and webcams at the moment, am I right in thinking that both resorts have little to no snow at resort/town level and I'm going to have to head up in to the mountains to do any snowboarding anyway?

I don't know either of those resorts but are they actually 'in the snow' resorts? A lot of Austrian resorts are real villages so generally below, or at the bottom of the snow line and you gondola up to the ski area. It's only the French that really go in for purpose-build resorts up the top of the mountain (thankfully with more grace and style in recent years, so they don't all double-up as cold war eastern European film sets in the summer).jammy-git said:

Zell am See is much better than Seefeld. Bigger ski area, closer to glaciers (for guaranteed snow), and more things to do in the evening. However, looking at reports and webcams at the moment, am I right in thinking that both resorts have little to no snow at resort/town level and I'm going to have to head up in to the mountains to do any snowboarding anyway?
Conditions right across Austria are bad to average at the moment. Most resorts have 30-80% of lifts open, but mostly on artificial snow (particularly below 2000m), and there is little major snowfall in the forecasts during Xmas. Chances are, it will snow before you get there in early January, and everything will be white, but be aware that it has been a poor snow season overall so far and many Austrian resorts are green and un-snowy today.
Thanks! To be honest I just want somewhere to do beginner/intermediate snowboarding during the day, decent food at the hotel, swimming pool/spa for relaxing and decent WiFi for working in the evening.
Currently very, very close to booking this: http://www.crystalski.co.uk/package/austria/obergu...

I'm in Courchevel just now, typing with a beer in front of me and Olga our chalet host behind me getting the dinner ready.
The weather is great and skiing is good, if a little light on the white stuff. Plenty in 1850 but can't ski down to 1650 as yet. I think we'll head over to Val Thorens tomorrow.
Goal for this holiday is to master backwards skiing...!

Ski with one leg ahead of the other and looking over the shoulder of the side of 'back' or downhillmost ski and switch as you turn. It'll make it easier to see where you're going. Looking forward to trying my new skis out soon (the orange ones - Dynafit Dhuagaliri's). As an aside, how many skis are "too many"?

I'm trying to sell my Snowblades; does this mean that I can buy two pairs (should someone be mug enough to take the 'blades off my hands), or is this equation incorrect: Snowblades = 1
Unfortunately snow blades don't count. Only grownups skis count towards the N+1 formula!NorthDave said:
