Did the hovercraft once. In a heavy swell. Frightened the bejaysus us out of me....and I consider myself to be quite seafaring.

Me too. It was a wonderful sight coming into dock, surrounded by spray and gliding up onto the ground. But horrible as a passenger experience! Glad I did it though.

Found a good deal on the ferry, tidy times, £45 return and £3 cashback, so bloody cheap really!

We went to both at the end of February, three days in Bruges and a day trip to Gent, it's only about 45 minutes max between them.

Bruges is expensive, but not hideously so if you look around. Do some research and avoid anywhere in the usual tourist trap type areas and its fine.

Don't know what you are into, but everyone here has the chocolate and beer angle covered (we went to the brewery tour in Bruges, you don't see much of the current brewing, but it's quite good fun. At the end, use your 'free' beer token to get one of the four beers on tap, then order the other three and get them all, you'll be quite merry come the end!

We love Flemish Primitive art, so the Groeninge Museum and the Memling Museum in Bruges was great, but the Gent altarpiece was awesome, worth going to see even if you aren't into art. The Fine Art museum in Gent was very good also, if you like that kind of thing.

Parking in Bruges at hotels can be expensive, you'll read lots of people say park at the station as its a nightmare to drive around. Not so, it's pretty easy really, find the nearest car park to your hotel and park there. We parked at t'Zand, excellent secure car park and 8 euros a day.

Bruges for the chocolate box appeal, Gent is more of a proper town.
Thanks, very informative!! Chose parking at the hotel as thought sod it, it's easier to drive straight there and leave there on the morning we leave, was £36 for 3 days, but we got 3 nights for 2 on the hotel anyway.

Mark.

You're welcome, good deal on the parking and the hotel.

You mentioned booze and fags, if you want to really stock up, we go to the Calais Wine Warehouse, it's only ten minutes from the Eurotunnel and the ferry port, if you spend over £300 you get a free return ferry crossing to use within 12 months.

Have a great time, we thought it was great, even if I did overindulge on the beer, mussels and cheese and brought on a gout attack!
