Death Valley Driving Holiday

We're due to drive there on Wednesday (currently in San Diego) and it's looking like touching 50 degrees
The tired mustang we're driving will have its work cut out, I turned down the $7 a day breakdown cover too, doh! We've got a stack of water and plenty of suncream. Will hope for the best, especially as the 'tang has told me I've got low "tire" pressure twice already.
I will be checking my hire care carefully before I accept it - hopefully it will be ok.The tired mustang we're driving will have its work cut out, I turned down the $7 a day breakdown cover too, doh! I will probably take the breakdown cover just incase.
Be sure to get some pictures!
be aware when driving on unpaved roads your insurnce may be invalidated!
we happened across a seemingly quite friendly cyote he posed for photos while on badwater basin road.
be warned the food at furnesscreek hotel the posh one is really not much good infact the steak was one of the worst ive ever eaten its also devoid of any sort of atmosphere. the food at the ranch isnt much better it seems but it is a bit cheaper and more choice you are a captive though as the only other place to get food ia pahrump 60 miles or beatty 40 miles or lone pine 105 miles.
someone mentioned about phones, they are pointless there is no signal

Thanks for the tips, only planning the standard touristy stuff really, Zabraskie, Dante etc. so all decent roads. 45 degrees here in palm springs today so slowly getting used to the heat. we happened across a seemingly quite friendly cyote he posed for photos while on badwater basin road.

Will be sure to avoid the hotel for food, someone else said similar.
Just arrived at furnace Creek ranch with it showing 126f (52c) on the car. Strangely it felt hotter in palm springs but admittedly we've only walked from the car!
Drove via 2 of the best roads I've ever seen (highways 330 & 18, big bear lake). Just epic. The mustang struggled through the twisties to be honest but dispatched slow tourists with ease when needed.
Highway 127 north was deserted apart from us and some inquisitive coyotes. There was an 8 mile straight where the mustang seemed to top out around 125 much to my disappointment & the OH's joy
Have only seen one patrol car the whole time we've been here, just before death valley junction, (highways 127 & 190). Fortunately just after we'd stopped for a photo so was cruising at the speed limit, phew! How the yanks stick to 55mph on some of those roads is beyond me.
The OH wants to try the 49er cafe so no choice in the matter for food!

Great pictures tvrolet, are they your own?
Yup... Also driven through/around in a couple Camaros, and last time was a Corvette convertible but not as photogenic as the pix I posted I love Vegas and US V8s, and always take a wee hoon to Death Valley (and Valley of Fire).

yer, cheers for the advice. I will keep well stocked up with water and fuel.
I was looking for any emergency numbers but it looks like 911 is all I need, not that the phone will work anyway...
I need to check what AVIS's break down cover is...
You might not get breakdown cover in July and August. I know with some vehicles the hire company tells you not to go into Death Valley in July/august and in June/September you can go in but are on your own if you break down. This was for an rv though, so no doubt rules for cars are more relaxed. I was looking for any emergency numbers but it looks like 911 is all I need, not that the phone will work anyway...
